Am in Winder and need a good outdoor range. I am tired of indoor 25/35 yard ranges. Anyone know where one is that I don't have to become a member of?
Wilson Shoals past Jaymore Farms. All you need is a 3 day hunting and fishing pass you can pick up from Walmart for $6.50. You can get a year one or if you already have another form of paperwork that's acceptable you're good. It's about an 80 yard range I'd say. People who run it are pretty laid back. Best time to go is when it isn't crowded. They close at 7pm.
If you are ever in Augusta on the weekends there is Pinetucky, they have pistol, rifle, skeet and trap. Open to the public sat & sun 12 to 5. It cost $12.
There is a private range that does not require membership near the wilson shoals range that allows dynamic and static training. It's been getting good reviews on outdoor trader and the 6.8 forums. Semper Fi Gun Training outdoor range. It's near Alto, GA.
If you go to Walmart, they probably have a georgia map book with topographical maps. I haven't seen one in a couple of years, but I think the books have a list of ranges on public lands like national forests, etc. It's called the Georgia Atlas & Gazatteer. It's also available on Amazon.com.
If you don't find anything outdoors near you to your liking, the "Georgia Gun Club" just opened a few weeks ago (100-yard indoor) off hwy124 in Buford (closer to Dacula). I only mention it because it's probably at most a 10-15 min drive from Winder. I know it's not exactly what your looking for, but just another option; hey maybe you wanna shoot on a crappy rainy day. I just made my first visit there a few days ago, was impressed...
MoreAltitude -- thanks for the mention of the GGC in dacula - almost - As a new resident, i too have been looking for a outdoor range - wilson shoals seem to be the best choice for me so far -- I am a bit spoiled as my last home sported 3 nice ranges all less than 10 miles away. I will check out the GGC soon as it is just down the hill from me --
