Any out there?
My only rifle is a 1938 Mosin Nagant 91/30, I use the iron sights, and surplus ammo. Is that old school enough?
Well, now and again, I drag out the Model 71 and put a few rounds of .348 Winchester downrange. Then go home and whimper softly......
Got a number of iron sighted old timers.
1903 Springfield 03-A3. Love to shoot the Old Gal! It is in great condition. I only shoot her about 5-10 rounds a year. The Bolt Face still has 80% of the finish still on it. Something about the old guns. God I wish they could talk! I know you have some nice ones!
Do you mean 'old school guns' or 'old school shooters' as in old PEOPLE?
I took my MAS 49/56 deer hunting 4 or 5 times this year.
Old school shooters. You can use a new rifle w/ irons if you can find one!
I never thought of them as old guns, they are in there prime! Kinda like me.
Old school shooters: Guys that use basic iron sight firearms, standard 3 position off hand positions, find a thrill in using 100 year old technology.
Find it works just fine!!! 303Tom, you suck! That is a great rifle.
That works. Maybe I can find a way to meet you in FLA for some pig hunting. I'll send some ammo down before hand.
I'd love to see a pic. The A3 is the bride, not the brides maid.
That sounds good, except I'm not in Florida! And hogs aren't a problem yet right here in my area, not much of hunting them. Oh there's a few, and some people hunt them, but right here they haven't become the problem that they are in other places, at least not yet.
Are we talking like *friends of Al Freeland* here?
OK your in Northern Fla.! Ole' Miss sounds good! My Brother lives in Hernando Fla. Thought it might be kinda close. A few hours. Lots of pigs.
Ha ha, yeah it might as well be north florida, it gets hot and muggy enough! But that would be Hernando MS, just south of Memphis TN.
I have taken two deer with a 1943 Lee Enfield No 4 with only iron sights. I like to think that my rifle has been used to killed both deer and Nazis.
jpattersonnh have you ever looked into cowboy action shooting? Lots of fun and definitely old school.
SASS-Home of Cowboy Action Shooting
I'm not into the dressing up part, it is fun though.
I have a 1942 No4 FTR'ed in 1952, 1/3 trigger upgrade. Love that rifle!
More then any other action/ rifle type, I have Classic Mausers. Just something about the wood stocks and smooth, strong action. I sold a few off, so I'm down to 9 or so.
Well my hunting gun battery at this point includes a 1919 manufacture Winchester '94, a first generation Savage 99 in .300 Savage, a sporterized Krag, a sporterized 03, A mid 50's Winchester Model 70, a 1939 Sauer Mauser '98, a 1940 Browning A5, an 1897 Winchester 12 ga, a few 1930's-40's and 50's Vintage Mossberg 22s, and a 1958 Colt Huntsman .22... And comming in a few weeks a 1906 manufacture Colt 1892 Revolver in .41 Long Colt.
I think I might qualify.
Anybody use a Gunsmoke powered by carbide (methane) to blacken iron sights?
I do. Does this make me and Al Freeland old school?
I know Birchwood Casey makes the spray on stuff but I've got carbide to last a lifetime and it's always cause to start a conversation at the range.
