I have an H&R "Sportsman" pistol. It's a revolver and holds nine 22lr rounds.
I have tried to reserch it but all I can find is the model 199 (SA) and the 999 (DA, vented barrel). This one is a DA, nonvented barrel. My question is, the spring that assists the ejector has..sprung.. and I need to get at it to replace it, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to remove the ejector to get to that spring. Is anyone familiar with this procedure? I have just aquired the gun and am new to repairing guns.

You can go to Numrich gun parts for a replacement spring. They also have a schematic of the gun though I don't know how much help it would be. I own a 999 Sportsman and recommend you get one of those magnifying light things to put on your head before you take it apart. Good luck!

Seedy: Thanks for the info on the parts. As for the schematics, most of them were just exploded views, but no text on how to take it apart. Either way, I'll definately give another look at them. I'll try to find a model number other than sportsman and I will order the schematic for it. Thanks.

If it's a top break 9 shot, it's probably a 999. Some of the early ones did
not have the vent rib barrel. Barrel profile was the same, just didn't have the
cuts on the side. Seems like the cylinder wasn't all that hard to remove on mine. Some kind of catch on the front end, down near the frame hinge?

Most top breaks are mechanical rather than spring on the eject. The spring
retracts the star. Sounds like maybe it's slipping out of engagement on the
eject stroke. Look hard at the hinge area---there is usually a little pawl that
is visible, it engages a cam that pushes the star up to eject.

Thanks Bill. What has happened is the end of the spring has slipped down lower than it is supposed to be, and is pinched between the rod on the ejector and the guide it sits in. I'll take another look at it and see if I can get it apart.

..i could fix it, you can look around the droors there at home
you can replace the spring, i think i have a new set of wood grips
for it around here in a droor???if you need them..

Got that bad boy apart this evening. That spring was all kinds of twisted. I snipped the "bad parts" but it left the spring to short to work. Thanks to seedy and that site he gave me, I should be able to order the spring and a few other parts that could stand to be replaced. Thanks to all who humored me.
