I get an atlas and gazetteer for every state I hunt in. The Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer has an excellent topographical map that shows hiking trails and logging paths. It shows a lot of backroads that are not/inaccurately shown on GPS units. It also shows the boundaries of state parks, federal parks and BLM areas. The state of CA likely publishes a map that shows public sporting areas. It would be impossible for LEA to enforce laws specific to each public use area without a state issued map. The same map should be available to the public so their is no confusion. Do a google search for public access areas in CA.

I really like the Atlas and Gazetteer. I buy one for every state I hunt in. Often I find places that are a local secret with the Delorme atlas. I also find natural bottlenecks that force game to travel through a certain area. http://www.amazon.com/California-Atlas-Gazetteer-Delorme/dp/0899333834

Awesome. Thanks. That's a lot of help.
    I'll pick one up ASAP.
Also, still interested in hearing about everyone's favorite spot (that they are willing to share)..
I understand there are some spots you'll want to keep secret...
