tonite the wife and i went and shot my new XDm 45ACP 4.5". im pretty impressed with it. along with the nice pelican case it comes with 2 mags holster loader and mag pouch. until november springfield is offering with new XD/XDm purchases 3 extra mags and a mag pouch free. that deal is what prompted me to finally get a XDm.

this group was shot at 15 yards with 14 rounds of awc 230grn self defense hollow points.

this was 40 rounds (3 mags +1 chamber) at 15 yards using berry plated 230grn fmj over 6.1 grains of unique. listed fps out of a 5" 1911 is 850fps for this loading

this is 40 more rounds of fmj rapid fire at 15 yards.

no fte ftf over 200 rounds fired. there was one stoppage due to overlong case on a reload as i dont trim range pistol brass. i find case stretch to be so minimal on pistol brass its not worth the effort to measure them all.

one of the things i found interesting is that the 2nd to the last round fired in a magazine upon firing and chambering the last round the gun produces a strange sproinging sound reminiscent of the sproing of a AR15 buffer tube on cycling.

its very very easy to shoot handgun the felt recoil is a little less than my colt series 70 but the muzzle flip is a little worse making it just a hair slower than a full size 1911. i would say its easier and faster and more comfy to shoot than my sig P220. i think the difference in felt recoil is the wider grip so the force of recoil is spread better across the palm.

the cz97BD still beats it for accuracy speed and felt recoil. but the cz97BD is all steal and very heavy.

anyway i give this gun a very very very close second to the 1911. i still prefer the 1911 but i will feel very comy carrying this for ccw/oc. i REALLY like the XDm 45

thanks :) im pretty surprised by how well it shoots. i was tinking about trigger mods before i tried it. but it really doesnt need anything. its a bit mushier than my colt 1911s but without a external safety i dont think i want it lighter. i do want the over travel and reset reduced. with that done it might get close to the speed of a 1911.

Think that weird noise might be the magazine spring?

ya. im pretty certain its the follower in the magazine hitting empty as the last round is stripped out at full force of the recoil. its felt more than heard. but i can definately tell when the last round is chambered. kinda cool if your into tactical type reloads.

    Congrats and good shooting.
I also like my XDM 45 and have gotten good groups at 25 & 50 yards with my reloads.

Kudos to you if you can get a good group with a pistol at 50 yards. I wish i could. Ill stick to my 15 yard shots.

Jon, Thanks for the detailed range report! I wish more people would do this kind of in-depth reporting to benefit us all!

Also, I know a lot of people would consider that AR-15 buffer feeling (I KNOW that feeling and sound and hate it in an AR!) a fault, but a way to feel when you load the last round while you are shooting without having to move your sight picture or grip is great! Train with it and see how well you can exploit it - I bet it can lower your reload times.

    thanks :)

would like to make an addendum.

after playing with the gun using dummy rounds the mag release from the factory was really stiff in the begining trying to drop a full mag. now after a few days sitting in front of the tv and just working the controls its become smooth on mag drops.

the right side mag button is very very stiff but im not a fan of ambi controls. if the right side release wasnt as stiff as it is i would be trying to figure a way to grind the button down flush.

after testing with empty cases the xdm unlike my newer manufacture colt 1911s will not feed empty cases so the use of full wadcutters will not work in this gun.

after a lot of dry firing the trigger has smoothed up a bit more. the striker reset is extremely short. right around a half inch of rearward slide movement is all thats needed to reset the striker and trigger.

and i love the sound and feel of the ar15/m16 buffer spring sproinging :)
