So I've never been much of a shotgun guy, but I picked up a used moss 500 12 ga in a package deal.. guy says it takes 2 3/4 and 3" shells. I don't know what I'll really use it for but I'm hoping to start shooting some clays. Anybody have any suggestions on loads to use?

Also, any after market upgrades t hat you suggest? Would like to get an over mold stock and fore end but Idk much other than that.

    Thanks

Great selection. The options for that gun are almost endless. I do decent shooting Skeet with mine and I've dropped pheasants at about 40 yards with it. Great all around gun.
Not sure on the 3" shell thing though. You may want to double check that. (Dont feel like digging mine out). You get the slugger barrel with it?

No just the field barrel. Have seen rifled one's go for under 150 so I'm not too concerned. I do need more chokes for it though. Only have a modified.

You'll be plenty happy with it. I usually just run the slugger barrel for anything other than Skeet.

Yeah that's what I hear. The action feels pretty loose as well, but considering it was essentially free, I'm not complaining

Yeah the action tends to be loosey goosey. Not a bad thing.

For sporting clays, I suggest using 8's or 9's, and don't use the skeet choke, i used it and my shots were spreading way to early, use a modified choke, it might have come pre installed in your gun, it did for me.

Some good just shooting ammo that I just bought was a box of "estate dove load" that seems to work good and is only about $5 or a box of 25. Here is a picture of the box

The best and cheapest 12 is the federal 100rd pack at wally world 25bucks cant go wrong. The 500s are the acura intergas of the gun world. Look at ati for some nice stock opitions. And magpul if u havent boycoted them yet. Oh and the mossberg ghost ring rear sight is an awsome starting point.

That's one of the things I love about my Mossbergs, a never ending supply of aftermarket goodies to mod with. Also with interchangeable barrels can be used for HD, trap, or hunting.

My 500 I've had for probably 20 yrs and never a problem. My 590 for about 10 yrs. only complaint with it it's a little muzzle heavy, but of course it's long and I have the SureFire fore end that adds weight. But again very reliable.

You have a 590 or a 590 A1? If you think a 590 is too heavy you need a shorter gun, and I would ask you to pick up a loaded 20" A1 and see what you think. THOSE are muzzle heavy! Built like tanks they are.

Frontier, how do you like that SureFire fore end? I've been thinking about getting one, but the price is pretty scary.

I like it ok I guess. The only problem is that it is a little heavy and makes it a little unbalanced. I have it on the 590A1 so it has the long barrel, heat shield, ghost ring sights, bayonet lug, kitchen sink, etc. so that doesn't help things.
Yep they are pretty pricey. The only reason I have it is because it came with the gun when I bought it from a buddy that was having $$$ trouble years ago.
The light is def. well made and heavy duty though.

How did you get the heat shield on while running the ghost rings? I was told it was either/or on those two.

I could see how it would be hefty on the front end, but I haven't seen any other lighting solutions other than cheap crap.

The shield doesn't extend the full length of the barrel. Everything was on the weapon when I bought it from my buddy. I'm not sure what he put on and what it came with from the factory. Here are a couple pics.

Man, that fore end looks sweet. Thanks for the info. I've been looking into Salient Arms conversion of a 930(I think that's the model). I read about it in Recoil magazine. I won't ever part with my 590A1 though, it's my go to HD gun and I also shoot skeet with it although the short barrel lets my buddies clean my clock most of the time.
