First off, welcome to the forum. Good to have you.

Second, do a search and you will find volumes of posts on the AR. ANd will find that the first question will be what do you want to use it for? How advanced? etc.

    good luck

Oh, BTW... 5.56 is the answer to your question ;)

well i think i have decided to go with a 243 because i would like to take it whitetail hunting and i think a 223 might get to be a little on the small side. I would still appreciate some opinions on some brands and likes and dislikes of some of the ars that everyone owns. Thanks again

    Yotehunter,
There are also some companies that make ARs in .308, which would be much better for whitetail and even some bigger game if need be. I know Armalite makes one called an AR-10, and there's 3 or 4 others but I don't remember the names.

Found a thread here that has some more info on it, hope this helps:

FCross7 , yea i have seen the .308 but i more so looking at doing predator hunting with it and a .308 is a little big. i would only take it out whitetail hunting if i know i would be able to get a close range shot. so i am still looking to stay with the .243. thanks for the input though i appreciate it. any help is welcome. thanks again

The .243 is a great round for deer, but the .308 is better and ammo is much more common. I have a DPMS AR in .308 (LR308B) that I highly recommend for accuracy, quality, and price. "R-Guns" in Illinois sells them for $935.
Also, don't overlook the .223 for deer either - with 75gr. HPBT ammo they work very well.

The .243 is not available in the AR15 platform-it's a length problem-AR15s are shorter/smaller than AR10s (magazine/bolt head). To get the .243 you have to move to the AR10 type platform. if you want to stick with the AR15 platform I suggest you go with the 25 wssm upper. As the others have already stated the .308 will be much cheaper in regards to ammo costs. If you're set on the .243 cartridge then go with the Remington R-25 which is available in .243, and built on the AR10 platform. Hope this helps.

The DPMS catalog offers a .243 as well as .338 Federal, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7.62 NATO, 300 Rem SAUM, 308. Win, 260 Rem., 7.62 x39, 6.8 x 43, & .204 Ruger all for the AR platform. DPMS made the receivers for the early Remington R-15 and R-25 AR's - I don't know if they still do.
