I have wanted to do this for years and finally after getting the last one in college I get to start now and probably not a worse time. I have my RCBS Rock Chunker setup, dies, powder, powder measure, etc.

The problem is I have 38 Special & 9mm brass but no small pistol primers and I have large pistol primers but no 45ACP brass. I have been sizing and deprimering the brass I have but can't put any together to test fire. I did get some small rifle primers but with no experience is it smart to use these in the 38/9mm?? Does anyone know where I can get even a small amount of small pistol primers or 45ACP brass???? Thanks

As you said, it's just a piss-poor time to be starting up. I was all ready to get a press and supplies when I saved the extra cash. Now that I have the cash, there's not a press nor supplies in sight at less than astronomical prices.
Folks are simply recommending you be persistent and opportunistisc when buying ammo and reloading supplies lately. Get to the shop early on delivery days, etc.
I was all set to start working on my C&R collection, but now there's no point as there's no ammo!

DO NOT USE any primer incorrectly. this can not be a safe practice. do you have a reloading book you are consulting? double check but i thought the 9mm used large pistol primers. i know my .40 does.

heres a website with great data on loads, however i did not see it listed what primer to use

you could also check our brass tader thread here. it may be possible for you to trade for some .45acp

Repeat after me- Powder, Bullet, Primer, Brass. Follow the recipe and do not try free-lancing until you have a test lab.

And NO- do not use rifle primers. Typically harder metal shell, MAY be taller than the pistol primers.

For 45 ACP brass, any ranges around you? You know you CAN buy once fired brass- and shipping is cheap. Check gunbroker and gunauction.

Really lucked up on the press and the gun shop did not jack the price up one cent. I have had to order from 4 different places to get stuff in stock. I have the Lymans and have really researched the Hodgon Data and several others and have a laptop on my reloading bench. Yeah I get about the same number of yes and no on the small rifle primers and I am not willing to go 50/50 I will wait. I am going to check another range this evening the first 2 were a solid NO...

check lohman arms out of texas.....
    www.lohmanarms.com

I was on their site about a week or two ago and they still had several brands of rifle and pistol primers in stock.....only problem is if you place an order it could still take 4-8 weeks for them to ship it.

simple. rifle primers are for rifles and pistol primers are for pistols. even if they do fit, there is probably a good reason there is a difference in them being marked as they are.

don't experiment with the unknown when it come to reloading. you life and limbs are always in danger if you do.

According tro SAAMI specs, and all reloading manuals, 9MM and .40 S&W use small pistol primers.
