I don't know anything about them, but I didn't start off with a semi-auto. Why not try to find a nice used revolver first? You might be able to find one for a good price that would allow you to also buy the Taurus.
I prefer steel guns. I have a Makarov and it's very simple to disassemble a service yourself. You might be able to find one for less than the Taurus. Quality ranges from E German to Russian to Bulgarian to other. Mine's a Bulgy, but I've had no problems with it.
Either way you go, you've got a gun - and the responsibility that goes with it.
