Hey ya'll just registered tonight, I hope to purcharse my first firearm within the next week. I am deciding between a taurus pt92 9mm, and a 24/7 9mm pro heinie ss. I would be happy if you could offer any opinoins on these guns, or any other guns in the 350-400 dollar price range. Thanks in advance and I look forward to posting.

I don't know anything about them, but I didn't start off with a semi-auto. Why not try to find a nice used revolver first? You might be able to find one for a good price that would allow you to also buy the Taurus.

I prefer steel guns. I have a Makarov and it's very simple to disassemble a service yourself. You might be able to find one for less than the Taurus. Quality ranges from E German to Russian to Bulgarian to other. Mine's a Bulgy, but I've had no problems with it.

Either way you go, you've got a gun - and the responsibility that goes with it.

I've never really cared for revolvers that much. Just not my cup of tea. And yes I am definantly ready for the responsibility. I own 2 shotguns and go hunting often(not as often as I would like to), but I am very aware of the responsibility of owning a firearm. This will just be my first handgun.

In the price range you are working with, I would recommend an RIA 1911A1. But then, I am an old timer, and that is the handgun I cut my teeth on (back when I had teeth). There is a reason the 1911 has been popular for 96 years.

Greetings All, I am another new member from Georgia. As for the other new member from Georgia, in regard to your purchase of a handgun. You should go to a shotting range and shoot several different guns to find the one that feels the best to you. I have a Bretta 380 for fun, my future wife likes my Traurus PT Mil 40, and I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II Covert from the Custom shop (45cal) with Crimson trace laser. Good luck in your choice.

You are getting good advice, nash8. Try different handguns to see what YOU like. I'm one of those dummy boys that can't keep any 1911 pistol working, but I love Glocks and even Ruger revolvers.

For unpleasant social situations, I prefer the huge Glock 21 ( .45 acp ). Many people hate Glocks. You will be putting a lot of money out for any firearm, so try before you buy.

Your first sidearm should be a 1911. If at some point a few years from now you want to increase your collection; have at it. 1911 need no tools to break down, is a simple and reliable system, and there is no other sidearm that has a higher availability for parts. Since you mentioned $400: Start with a Springfield Armory Mil-Spec or USGI.

RIA's are crap. They are not milspec; even though they advert that they are. I know folks who have had lots of parts not work; including milspec mags from Chip McCormick. Heck, you know some of those folks too. ;-)

FALphil I live in Woodstock, about 20-25 minutes north of the big chicken off 575. I was planning on shooting the pt92 at my local range tomorrow, I havent had a chance to get up there for the past couple of weeks. I don't think they have a 24/7 to rent as far I can remember. I have also looked at a few different 1911's as well. I will have to check them out a little bit more, and see if I can get my hands on one at the range tomorrow. I appreciate all the advice.

I have never met an RIA owner who was unhappy with the gun. I have met a lot of RIA non-owners who own expensive 1911s and call RIAs crap.

I own no RIAs, but rather a couple of expensive 1911s, but I have shot RIAs and most of them shot better than my expensive Springer.
