New guy from Southern California

Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Spencer, and I'm from Southern California. I'm 23 and married. I've fired many different guns, but never owned a firearm til a couple days ago, I bought a Mossberg 500 12gauge shotgun. I'm getting ready to purchase a handgun for my wife, who is small in stature, (5'2"-120lbs), so I joined the forum to learn more about calibers, gun types, styles, and whatever else I can so I'm not some uneducated fool. I'm in the market to buy my first home real soon so if there's anything you guys can teach me or tip me, it's much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome here from Oregon.
Welcome to the Forum!
Thanks folks. What are you guys shooting? I'm considering a Ruger LC9 for my wife.
I haven't handled an LC9. I did have an SR9C and it was an excellent pistol.

Your best bet (as a married man ;)) is to have your wife handle as many handguns as possible. She'll definitely figure out which ones feel best. Then try and find a range that rents guns and have her shoot them or guns that are as close as possible.

Remind her that smaller guns recoil more and while they are easier to carry, they can be a pain to shoot. If she doesn't enjoy shooting it, she won't practice and she needs to practice.
I'll hafta do that. I always figured higher caliber=more recoil. Is that not true?
Higher calibers do have more recoil than smaller calibers. However, a small caliber in a small gun will recoil more than it would in a larger gun. So, a full size 1911 shooting a .45ACP may feel more comfortable that shooting a .380 in a pocket pistol.
I see what you're saying. So what would you guys recommend for home defense/recreation?

Welcome from Georgia. Glad you found us. Enjoy.
WELCOME!:)
Welcome from another califite.
Yep,
find a range that rents,
and try several guns..
Start your practice with a .22.
Ammo is cheap.
Are you looking for a particular action? Semi-auto or revolver?

Semi auto. Probably 9mm or .40.

My buddy gave his wife a glock 26 and she loves it. If you're looking for a slimmer grip I think the Ruger lc9 is a nice gun. The recoil on the Ruger may be a little more than the glock.

My wife shoots a S&W .38 special. She won't even pick up another pistol.

If you can get her to a range where she can try a few different types that would be the best way for her to find out what she's most comfortable with.
