my buddy is in the market for a new gun, he has fired some 1911's and really enjoyed them, he has also fired the XD and enjoyed it, he roughly has $600-$650 in his budget and he needs a good home defense pistol.....if he gets a 1911 instead of the XD is there any in that price range that you guys would recommend?

i told him i would ask you guys and let him know thank you for all your recommendations

For that price range and for home defense, maybe he should be looking at revolvers. Or a shotty. I'm just sayin....

New 1911s in that price range are gonna be slim pickins. Used will open alot of options. I don't have experience with the xd, but have heard nothing but good as far as reliability and accuracy goes. the only complaints I have heard of the xd were to do with the dao trigger. That is just a personal preference. Some people just like a sa trigger better.
In that price range your friend has alot of options other than just a xd and a 1911. I would suggest that he takes some time and really look at some more options.
A gun show or a large gun shop will allow him to look and lay hands on many options.

Springfield Armory (G.I. and Mil Spec) has new models in that price range. Basic yes, but serviceable.

You can pick up a Rock Island Armory 1911 tactical for about $500
i have one and its a great shooter and a good entry level 1911 as well
but dont dismiss the XD right away either i hear from those who own them love them

For $650 you can find a great used 1911. A Kimber, a Colt, etc.... You can also buy the XD for $500 or so and have $100 to get some good ammo, a holster, or mags. I personally own a Kimber and an XD45. They are both outstanding weapons and I've trusted my life with both.

    YOU might can,but I can't! :(

If it's a strictly home defense gun and he is set on a pistol I would go with a good .45acp with a 4inch barrel or longer. XD, M&P, SIG, HK,Ruger, FN,etc.just to name a few.

In that price range he'll do good, but I wouldn't put everything into a low end 1911 for home defense.

    My .02 :)

That's a right good price. I think mine was a little over $700 new in stainless. It is also a really good shooter and is about as accurate as you will find right out of the box. Taurus produces a very good pistol and you get the PT 1911 with a lot of amenities that others only get in the custom shop.
Another that i like even better and is my carry gun is the Kimber Ultra Compact II Stainless in .45. It too is an excellent shooter.

A friend of mine has the stainless taurus as well. I've shot it and it is a good shooter for the money. I've seen that model around for pretty close to that price too.

Next time we go to the range we'll put his taurus up against the CZ75b and see how it performs. Him shooting both and me shooting both. Slow, accuracy shots. I'll keep you posted. Hopefully we'll be able to do this friday.

the range report, i wish i could post pictures but getting them off my dang i phone is rediculous, i didnt bring the camera because i thought that would be fine but any way, as soon as i get the pictures off the phone i will post the, gun was very accurate, we loved shooting it, we ran a couple hundred rounds through it and it only had 2 hang ups, when the last bullet was being ejected, it shot very well. We were unable to find an open range today so we went out to a canal so not really any targets, just the beer cans from the locals
