If, what you imply, is correct, and 2/3 of our lawmakers are in favor of addional gun controls, then, in our American way of government, what do you think should happen? The basis premise of a Democracy is the same as in Robert's Rules of Order: The minority must be heard, but the majority must rule.

Rember this is a "conditional" argument. The key words are "if" and "then." :)

I thought thought the minority is protected from the majority because we are A REPUBLIC and a nation of laws.

The minority opinion must be heard, the majority must rule. That is what Democracy is all about. When the minority is allowed to rule, we will no longer be either a Democracy or a Republic.

I can't believe that you have difficulty grasping that notion.

Then you are opposed to Gay marriage and abortion? That is a very interesting stand for a liberal? These are both political stands not supported by the majority.
Chain I will ask you again? What kind of gun control would you like to see impossed on American gun owners?

We as a nation are not a democracy.
In the wisdom of the founders the House comes up for election every 2 years, a 3rd of the Senate is up for election every 2 years. I contend that if gridlock is the will of the people, (2010 midterm) it has its purpose. We shall see if divided government can spare our 2a rights from your beloved tyrant.

downsouth is correct. We as a nation are not a democracy. The Congress has to work within the confines of the US Constitution. If they ignore the Constitution the Courts are supposed to stop the illegal laws. The last resort is Jury nullification.

The Socialist movement is very popular in the U.S. The Leaders of this movement are supported by the powerful media and the very rich such as Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and Geo Sorroes.
Power and money has always over taken the rights of citizens outside the chosen political circle. The changes in the moral fiber was changed in the last 4 years. The next 4 years will see more taxes fewer jobs relaxed drug laws more illegals and gun control.:(

The measure would stiffen penalties for bringing guns near schools..... Yeah that's gonna help! These guys go in there kill a bunch of kids them kill themselves so a law threatening harsher penalties will definetly stop this! Why didn't I think of that?!

"When the minority is allowed to rule, we will no longer be either a Democracy or a Republic."

Wow! Democracy if not dying, is surely dead. The 'dressing of ceremonial pomp' might still give it that illusion. But the idea, however sublime and noble, no longer holds true. This country has been ruled for the past thirty years by Plutocrats and Oligarchs leading to a New World Order. To think otherwise is to streneously hope the tides might turn.

What are your statistics to support that. I am not a liberal, and think the majority support a woman's choice. I also think there are a lot like me and could care less if gays want to marry. Let them pay for divorce also.

I don't disagree with your statement, and am amazed since a socialized nation has no room for people loke Buffet, Gates and Sorros to acquire that wealth. It is free enterprise, which is generally seen in more democratic countries that rewards individual initiative and drive.

Of course those welfare people and illegals you speak of are just an un-mined lode of undocumented Democrats.

We all know stiffining penalties for having a gun near a school will do nothing to anyone but those who are not paying attention. The guy at Sandy Hook certainly would not have cared. But the Libs think that is a badge of "At least we are doing something!"

Also the column said they would make it tougher for felons and the mentally ill to get guns. How, pick them up at the police station? Again, same Libs, same answer, and same denial that the criminals don't give a bleep about your laws.

12,000 people at the Orlando gun and knife show this weekend cannot be wrong! I am preaching to the choir, but guns are not bad.

HR 35 was introduced to repeal the 1000 foot rule for schools.

Let's not fret yet. The fight is just beginning. If you don't already belong to a pro-gun group join one. Send an emergency contrabution to a pro-gun group whether you are a member or not. Call, write, and e-mail your senators and congressman. There are approx. 80 million gun owners in this country. If just a fraction of us stick together and fight tooth and nail we will win.

As a republic, there are guidelines setup to protect the minority (called our Bill of Rights).

They were established to protect the minority from erosion of their rights and privileges by the majority.

Not taking sides with either of you up top...but we have not been a true Democracy or Republic for quite some time. We've become a fascist, capitalist society RULED by corporations. And its gonna stay this way until someone fights back for once instead of letting the powers that be dictate the new rules.

So if the Majority rules to abolish the 1st Amendment...it's okay?
