Getting in to shooting a lot recently. Picked up a s&w .40 and ruger .357 mag over the past year and now I'm looking in to some high power rifles. Where would you guys point me for a nice 300 win mag or 7mm? Hope to learn lots here,

Welcome from northern Kentucky.

I really wouldn't recommend a 300 win mag or 7mm for someone that isnt a seasoned shooter.

I myself would recommend a Mosin Nagant as a first high powered rifle, they are very affordable, as is the ammo.

They make great rifles even for experienced shooters.

What would turn a shooter (new or experianced) away from a larger caliber? Ive been around and shot guns my whole life, just getting in to "buying" them recently lol. What caliber in the mosin you mentioned would you recommend?

Recoil is a big hurdle in high powered rifles, the cost of some ammo is also very prohibitive.

The Mosin Nagant is chambered in 7.62x54r, some ammo is corrosive so it must be cleaned well after shooting.

The rifles cost between $100 and $250 depending on the model. I'd recommend the 91/30 ($100-$130)

Ah, now that you said 7.62, I believe I've shot one of those. Hold 3+1, real long barrel, and the rear sight is adjustable for some crazy elevation? I remember when I shot it I told myself I wanted one but it didn't have rails for a scope. What do you do there? I'd also like to have a bi-pod cause a lot of these guns are pretty heavy

Ok, clicking on the link I was wrong on the magazine size and I believe it was the number 2 gun I fired. Still curious on a scope mount

There is a mount that can be used for a scope, but I recommend becoming proficient with the iron sights first. Also, while these are cheaper rifles, they are also a piece of history and somewhat collectible. I personally would not modify them, but to each their own.

Well at that price and as many were built I could have one all stock and one with all the fun toys

lol. As for modern rifles, what do you shoot?

I shoot old rifles almost exclusively, I shoot my AR15 and SKS a little.

Usually as far as rifles go I shoot my M1, my Kar98k and my Nagant. Every now and them I get the Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.1 out.

Milsurp rifles are very addictive.

1. What do you want,to do w rifle ? LR accuracy isn't cheap and takes lots of ammo n practice w good glass which drives cost up even higher.

2. Bench rest shooting - lots of fun but can be downright painful w boomers. Flinch is easy to develop and hard to get rid of. Like the yips in putting for golf.

The good news: off the shelf - entry level rifles have never been better and high end rifles will guarantee MOA performance w custom shop options...

The 6.5 mm family is easy on the shoulder and due to high BC, will actually pass faster rounds after 4-600 yds n keep going.

My first choice w be SAKO - they guarantee 5 shot MOA accuracy so if something goes wrong you know who to blame.

2nd choice Savage LR Hunter as it has a few custom touches but Savage tech said their M&P line gets a wee bit more attention.

Don't forget to buy 22 LR for training, fun & something to do while barrel cools.

Easy on the acronyms lol. As for what I want out of a rifle, first of all, I have an issue with being different. If I purchased a rifle and found out a week later my neighbor had one, mine would be for sale, I enjoy being unique and appearance of the fire arm is also important to me. I want something that I can coyote hunt with, pick off the dam cat that thinks my camaro a wrangler is his from where ever he is, and most importantly just ENJOY shooting. I do find enjoyment from a gun that reminds a half hour later you shot it, figured a larger mag round would do that lol. I will use it for competitive plinking with friends n the area and it's always nice to show up your buddies. Ammo cost isn't a huge concern for me either, I'll probably pick up a box or 2 of ammo every Friday after work and shoot every other month or so. Basically, I want a good looking, long lasting rifle that won't leave me wishing for more when I push it's limits. As for glass, I've had my eye on the newer leupold series with the 4.5-14x with a 50mm lens that has the barrel relieve to use short rings. Undecided on rings
