Chinese researchers have reportedly identified a new strain of the swine flu that has the potential to become a pandemic.

Scientists in China say the strain, which emerged recently, is carried by pigs but can infect humans. A study of the new virus was published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers say the virus has “all the hallmarks” of being highly adapted to spread from person to person and trigger a global outbreak.

Given that it’s a new development, people will likely have little to no immunity.

Professor Kin-Chow Chang and his colleagues at Nottingham University say they are closely monitoring this new strain, which they are calling G4 EA H1N1.

The new strain, of which they found evidence among people who work in Chinese slaughterhouses, can grow and multiply in the cells lining human airways.

Kin-Chow told the BBC: “Right now we are distracted with coronavirus, and rightly so. But we must not lose sight of potentially dangerous new viruses.”

    Lovely.

Life's a contact sport. I just hope "they" are on full-steam-ahead production levels, on PPE, ventilators, new equipment development, staffing approaches, correction of aspects needing correction (that have been learned this past ~6mos).

'Cause the planet's economy is going to auger-in, if countries dare shut down long-term. And that'll help nobody.

    IMO

I am beginning to think that China has, or are using BIO Research to secretly declare War on the USA and other countries around the World. To avoid immediate returned retaliation.
They do not care if they lose thousands of people in China due to their over population there anyway. And they then could become the Worlds number one Super Power!
Only a thought! But could it possibly be true?

^ I believe their desire for power and control is that callous and disregarding of short-term impact on people. But, whether they're responsible for such outbreaks deliberately ... who can say.

Of course, how anyone could keep clean a swine slaughtering operation in a region where bats and "wet markets" and other potential vectors abound is beyond me. Probably beyond them. (Look at the mess that occurs in Ebola disease regions, in Africa, for example, and yet people continue to go after "bush" meats and largely disregard sanitary threats. [Don't even get me started on sidewalk-vendor meal prep, in certain countries in Asia.])

All things considered, I prefer to cook at home. Much safer, that way.

Of course, it's hard to "hermit" at home, if desiring to have a life well-lived.

    Choices.

The "New Flu in the Brew" thread title reminds me of the old Wizard Of Id comics. "Jailor, there's a fly in my swill."

Another excuse for power hungry little tyrants to exceed their authority, and attempt to exhert control of the population they have no authority to impose, now that the covid farce is being questioned and rebelled against.

I truly hope the same runts dont try another socialist exercise using this new scare tactic . Alot of folks are sick to death of gov meddling where it has no authority to meddle and likely wont go along again.

Personally, not worried about ‘Potential” nonsense in china per se., but extremely concerned the current pandemic “vaccine” $

    QUOTE;
Now that the FDA has approved the drug remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19, a big question looms: How much will it cost? The drug's manufacturer, Gilead Sciences, is donating its current stock, enough to treat about 140,000 patients, reports Barron's, but its pricing decision after that will be under scrutiny.

    $4,500:
A report issued last Friday by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, a research group that offers guidance on pricing, said Gilead could charge about $4,500 per treatment course if further testing proves that it saves lives. It figures a treatment course of 10 days.
$390: The group says the price could be $390 per course if the drug has a lesser effect: that is, it doesn't save lives, but it speeds up recovery by a few days, per Axios.
$10: The report also provides a low range of $10, which it says would allow Gilead to recover the cost of making the drug but forgo any profits. Unquote...

Other than the socialist take over aspect the vaccine itself is not a concern for me.

    I wont be taking it.

"Swine Flu" outbreak a few years ago was serious stuff. Swine are close to humans in many physical aspects and pork a staple even where beef is rare (no pun intended). Hope we get truth this time, not hysteria.

Cures are not profitable for the drug companies or the whole medical profession. Think about the economic impact if someone invented a $10 pill you took once and it cured/prevented all cancer. The cost of having advanced cancer is staggering. I still wonder if there is a cure and Big Pharmacy is hiding it. It is a multi billion if not multi trillion dollar industry.

Kinda like wondering why auto manufacturers buy up electric vehicle & long lasting battery patents where they are ratholed and languish and are forgotten by the world.

Personally, i do not believe they have no “vested” interest as the volume would be minimal impact on gas sales...even hybrids are poorly designed with minimal interest from the general buying public.

kinda like general public buying extremely high end & exotic vehicles.

    Bullseye, sniper.

How much longer can one trust reports from the “Chinese scientists” before he is officially a fool?

Scientists do exist in China but they never speak to you directly. It is always the Chinese Communist Party, except an occasional dissident under house arrest. Dudes, some of you are 100 years old. Does anyone here remember how the communist system works?
If I were the CCP I would flood the western media with reports of new disease coming. It dilutes the covid incident, makes it one of many natural occurrences. And it won’t hurt to scare Americans again and again. That’s what they are doing.

Well, the COVID-1984 pandemic isn't working out after a fashion, so then there were the Murder Hornets and locusts, then it was the riots (which also don't seem to pan out), so we're back to COVID-1984, then it is the "Godzilla" Sahara dust storm. So, it is about time to bring out a new virus. Until the asteroid comes...

    Or Global Warming/Climate Change.

    Or the magnetic poles shift.

    Or 5G.

    Or "racism!".

And we're only halfway through 2020!!!
