Put a saiga 5.45x39 on layaway today. Comes with one 30 round mag. I got so excited about the price that other than checking the function of the gun I didn't even think to ask more about it. I know that similar guns chambered in the same caliber go for 800-900$

I'm jc the conversion means what exactly?
Saigas are imported in a sporting format with out a pistol grip, the trigger and FCG are also in non traditional locations for a AK variant rifle.

If it has a pistol grip and looks like an AK then its been converted, and if it hasn't then using a 30 round magazine is in violation of 922(r). Post a picture and I'll tell you for sure

Wait....no pistol grip means a 30 round mag is illegal??
For a foriegn saiga rifle,it must be imported in compliance with 922r. You can't attach a pistol grip or use high capacity magazines or have any features of a "assault rifle". You can convert it to be able to legally use these type of items such as high-cap mags, pistol grips, bayonet lugs,flash-hiders by putting 4 (four) U.S. made parts in it (as far as AK type weapons go,other rifle platforms require different amount of U.S. made parts based on total number of parts). Most people achieve the four U.S made parts by replacing the fire control group with a American made one which counts as three parts (trigger, hammer, and sear) and then attaching a American made stock or fore-end.

The whole premise this law is that a so called "assault rifle" that's made with no American parts is somehow more evil or dangerous than one with American parts in it.

Yea... I know its goofy. But that our politicians for you.

So in short,no you can't use anything above ten round magazines in a unconverted saiga rifle legally.

Has anybody else ever seen a gun for the first time and heard it say "I am your gun". "I am going to go home with you." Then you bought it without a second thought?

If the gun shop is selling it with a 30 rd mag wouldn't it have to already be converted?
Never seen a saiga converted without the use of a pistol grip and conventional stock,I think the gun shop was probably just Ignorant about the import laws regarding saigas.

Post pictures!

Congratulations on a great caliber. I have a SAR-2 in 5,45x39 and it's a great caliber.

It was my impression that you can use a 30 round magazine in an uconverted gun.

You can't put a pistol grip, bayonet lug, etc on it without the 922r compliance. But I believe any magazine is okay.

Ammo will be back in stock in a few months. I buy mine in 1080 round spam cans from

Well I lied. My Virginia drivers license a d chl don't prove I'm an American citizen and as such cannot purchase an "assault weapon" so I have to go back tomorrow with my passport, birth certificate or voters registration card.
