Hello everyone, I just purchased a new ASP 21 inch baton, but It seems to have a few problems with it. Im sure some of them, or maybe even all of them are just natural parts of the product itself but I'd still like to make sure If anyone can offer some help on the matter.

The first seems to stem from the fact that my baton measures in at 19.75 inches exact from tip to end when expanded, and measures 7.75 inches when not expanded (Which is correct as far as I know). Why its 1.25 inches shorter then it claims to be I dont know..

Also the paint on the black chrome model I have seems to be coming off in some way, I dont know if its just the left over paint mixed with residual grease or what it is, but that obviously worries me.

And as a final note I just thought I'd mention that having to close the damn thing against a hard surface, concrete being the only one I have found to reliabily do it each time is already peeling the paint off the front tip after only a few strikes.

Though Im sure some of these things like I said just comes with the territory, any help on the matter would be appreciated.

keep training with it. it will begin to close a little easier. they are designed to take a beating but the paint will inevitably chip off. this does not affect function. ASP also recently came out with a baton that does not have to be struck on the ground to close. i think Galls sells it. as for the length, i never took the time to measure mine. hope that helps.

Ah, I think you misunderstood me when I mentioned the paint, I just got the package today, brand new and when I opened it the paint on the baton began to smear off turning my hands a pitch black.. lol.. The paint did not "chip off in anyway".

Could be a black grease but I am not sure. What does the metal look like after the "paint" smears off?

Difficult closing? That just means you opened it correctly. You can GENTLY tap the tip on the ground with the baton held at a 45 degree angle. Rotate 1/3 turn, tap again. Rotate 1/3 turn, tap once again and then try closing in the normal fashion. ASP specifically does not recommend this method as some Nimrods cannot grasp the concept of "tap gently". I have seen some morons beat the baton at a 45 degree angle and bend it.

As for the length? Maybe a female designed it. They are notorious at misjudging length as they have been told 4" is actually 6" for so long they are confused.

Lacking a chunk of concrete, you can also strike the tip sharply against a bad guy. Your mileage may vary....

I think the "paint" you're seeing is light lubricant from the factory that is smearing onto your hands. I use an electroless nickel plated ASP and it does the same thing. If you take the entire baton apart, you should find more in the "handle" area. Unless you swab it out of this area, it will keep showing up on the shafts after they have been retracted.

I have had my ASP 21 since my instructors course in '93, but it was stolen from the dog van in Rennes three months ago, and I duly ordered a new one to replace it. Unbelievibly on Monday the Police Nationale called at the house and produced my ASP. They had locked a guy up on unrelated charge and he had it on him, and he coughed where he got it. Anyway needless to say I examined the two baton's and you are right the new ASP 21 is shorter by a good inch or so........but the other guys are right it will losen up. But it was nice to get 'Vera' back (my old ASP), she is nicely broken in.............

I think you're wasting your time with a POS like that. If you're carrying it for personal protection then I guess it's ok, but if you're carrying for a security job or as a police officer then get a diamond wood baton.

I have never had one bend or break in 15 years, in training or operational, I find for what I do long batons get in the way, but each to their own......
