Well, I have been contemplating a new AK purchase

I have a almost converted 5.56 Saiga AK variant

What manufacturers should I be looking at? Arsenal? WASR? Others? Saiga?

and would I be better served with a 7.62x39mm or 5.45X39mm

My thoughts on this is to get a harder hitting gun so I am leaning towards the 7.62x39mm But I also want a cool tactical carbine too

I took my Saiga out with a single point sling and my 40 S&W pistol to work on transitioning on the move from carbine to pistol shooting a standard PPC target and found I am really rusty on that (more practice) but did better than I thought I would

    Thoughts?

I have both the 7.69 and 5.45 and I really like them both. Don't get the idea the 5.45 is not a man stopper because it sure has been effective in doing the job. There are times where the 7.69 will shoot through heavy obstacle's but you can carry a lot more Ammo. with you using 5.45.:)

If one has a rifle the only time to revert to a handgun, is if the rifle will no longer shoot or you are out of rifle Ammo.;)

You use a side arm to get to the rifle.

Only other item I might add is it's simple to find 7.62x39 AK Mags at really good prices. But not so easy with finding the 5.45x39 AK Mags at good prices.
Same with finding the Ammo. I notice the Firearm show almost never have the 5.45x39 Ammo. but it can be found online so it's no deal killer.;)

So what's your price point? There's nothing wrong with a WASR or another Saiga at the low end. Either of the calibers you mentioned are ok, it's up to you. I've had a WASR 10/63 for five years with no problems. Lots of cheap surplus magazines and 7.62x39.

My opinion for for me..? So let's say you don't wanna spend a lot, and who can these days but I own a GP/WASR/10-63 and I love t much... Plus I have an 74 muzzle brake combined with the new beryl style rail with flip up peep sight from guntec which doubles the sight radius and I was able to shoot a group of 6 shots at 4 and 3/4 inches out to 150yds. I didn't have to spend much an AK to get happy result with accuracy and with today's new and better accessories the AK can be dressed up and hit the fancy places the AR15 goes to. Bad analogy sorry...good luck

I'm a big fan on converting saigas. Great base rifles. I would go with a 762.x39 for a first, just for the tradition, then a 545x39. The 545x39 is going to get you a flatter shooting round, with an increased accuracy at distance.

As far as hitting harder......I'm not going to get wrapped up into all the interwebz ballistics battle, but if you can find a GOOD soft point 762x39, its a great gun.

The original AK was designed for the m43.(7.62 x39)

If you're going for an original feel, I'd say stick with

    the original ammo.
