hey again, this might sound a bit repetitive so sorry if it is, but i want a center fire (never have owned one) and i just cant seem to decide on a damn caliber!!! put it this way 95%-99% of the shooting will be at the range... so is there any point of getting a big caliber such as a .308?? because i want a savage model 10FP and if u dont know already it only comes in a 223 and 308, but if u have any other ideas on different cals, (besides rimfires have enough of those) please let me know before i rip the rest of my hair out.

Thanks for your time,
Bainey

Go with the Savage #10 in the .223

Plenty of ammo. It won't punish you when you shoot it, so you will be inclined to shoot it more and that package is a really great deal on the market right now.

If you absolutely must have a center fire rifle for plinking at the range, that Savage package is a lot better, for less money, than a lot of other options.

.223 ammo isn't too bad on price, and you can buy it anywhere.

I usually don't chime in on caliber questions, but I've shot a rifle chambered in .223 only once. I usually shoot God's Own Rifle Caliber, the 30-06. If you're just using it for the range, then I would get the .223 instead of the .308. Like JD said, it's cheaper, and the recoil is less punishing. Less punishing, more shooting. Shooting is supposed to be fun as well as educational. Might as well have more time shooting instead of nursing sore shoulders. :D

Yes but will he ever want to deer hunt with it ?

I think some states still mandate calibers bigger than the 223 if he will .

I think the Savages also come in 243 Winchester and will cover all the bases if he might hunt with it sometime .

Going with that, I am going to lean towards no. The package he is looking at comes in .308 & .223 only. I am sure they make a package that offers .243, but it's probably more money.

As this is his first piece, I would presume that cost if a factor.

But - without much input from TS, we will never know...
