Hello all. I've been in the market for my own firearm for some time now. I've looked at many different guns, but I don't know what's considered good and what's considered bad in the firearms community. I was hoping for some suggestions. Few things I want:
-Less than ~$300
-Short enough for home defense/personal defense
-Fairly cheap magazines
-Has fair stopping power
-Semi Auto
-Can be used for range shooting
Icing on the cake would be if it is a gun using 7.62x39mm as we already own a few guns that take the round. Any help, guidance, advice, or suggestions are much appreciated.

I assume you want a long gun of some sort?

For that price range you are going to be looking at the AK variants - You aren't going to be able to realistically touch an AR in that price range.

The AK's will give you the caliber you are looking for and there aren't too many other long guns that I can see fitting your list.

You could probably get a shotgun in that price range, good for home defense, ammo is decently priced, but you aren't going to get a semi auto of any decent make in that price range.

There are several AK guys on this site, and I am sure one of them can point you towards a decent manufacturer, this isn't really my area of expertise...

I would say go with a shotgun for the home defense. Check the local trader papers for a wingmaster or a moss 500. these are pump guns and are a dime a dozen but will not break the bank. They are good and reliable and of course the 12 GA ammo is cheep.
