I bought an AR15 last year and the dealer threw in a cheap red dot scope. I was not ready to buy the optics at the time because I wanted to research my options.

I've looking on Gunbroker.com and there are several Trijicon Acog 4X32 listed for around $800 NIB. And, then there are several listed in the $1,200 to $1,400 range.

Can someone explain what the differences are?

    Thanks

    Steven

Mainly the magnification and the reticle is compinsated to a 223 I believe. Not completely sure on it though. I looked at them once then deleted the web page because I didn't feel like spending more on a sight than my entire gun costed. A nice bushnell 1-4x32 will do the same thing as it, just a little bigger and you can buy ~10 for the price of one Trijicon

Magnification. Some models incorporate an RMR sight on top. RCO ARD will add cost. Many different reticle/color combos

My TA31H-G ACOG with the kill flash ARD:

Was around $1100 new. They hold value well and are VERY robust. If you have the $$$, I highly recommend.

Build quality, light gathering capability, ergonomics, ability to stay locked at whatever zero you set, field of view / eye relief. Basically, it's a Cadillac and I love the ones I have but they were designed tor people who roll around in the dirt in a war zone. Perfectly acceptable results from lesser priced optics. Just stay away from the $49 dollar Chinese specials.

I think what makes up the price difference you are seeing is similar models with the method of illumination driving the price difference...

Some models, such as the TA-31F which I have on my RRA 5.56, have the reticle illuminated by tritium for low-light conditions, and fiber optics which brighten the reticle when ambient light is available. You will see the Bindon Aiming Concept (BAC) feature advertised for these models. Notice the fiber optic tube running somewhat the length of the optic body in some of the pictures in the above posts.

Other models that lack the fiber optic feature will be at the lower price point. There are obviously numerous other options as well, but in a general sense I think this is the price difference you have noticed.

If you want an ACOG, get an ACOG, and stay away from the Chinese NcSTAR junk and other knock-offs.

Don't meant to hijack the thread but is that a 16s or 17s ?

Absolutely right. They are overbuilt for those who will be fast roping out of helos, etc. That is one reason they are sooooo expensive. You can get Nikon, etc for 1/3 of the price.

That said, if you have the $$$....I say go for it!

Always gotta show up with your fancy QD stuff, and 9 different ACOG'S, stealin' my thunder Retro!!!! :D

I wouldn't mind if you just started a "my stuff" pics thread....love that setup. And you're right that's the doc optic, not the RMR that I called it in my post.

Thanks to everyone for your help. Treehugger, I new there had to be some difference and your response helps me. What are the limitations on the models that lack a fiber optic feature?

Dont buy a trijicon aimpoint or eotech off ebay. There are a lot and i mean a lot of fakes being sold using real pics of real acogs aimpoints and eotechs.

I agree, get it from a reputable dealer or risk being ripped off.

You want the "real steel" not become a victim of real steal.
