    I do not yet own a handgun, but I would like for my first one to be a 1911.
    With my budget of 1500, what would you suggest?

    I would check out Dan Wesson, Colt, or Springfield. Best bang for your buck in that price range, IMO.

    What are you opinions on the Colt Commander?

    Can't go wrong with a Colt! That's where it all started. But I'll defer to Cane, our resident Colt expert, who I'm sure will be along shortly.

    Sweet!
    My grandfather had a colt commander when he was in WW2, and everyone I've known thats had one or even heard of one has said they are great guns.

    Problem is, that $1500 budget doesn't include ammo. .45 ain't cheap to shoot, so you might look into a Kimber model, with a .22 conversion kit. That way you can go to the range and shoot the crap out of it.

    The ideal carry gun, IMHO is the Colt Light Weight Commander Model O4860XSE;

    Why not a Colt model with a conversion kit??

    Or reload?

    I thought a thread a while back said that Colt didn't make conversion kits, but if they do, that's definitely a solid option. And if it's his first handgun, he probably isn't equipped to reload yet.

    You can put a Kimber conversion kit on a Colt.

    The Colt might not like it but it will work. [IMG]

    As I've always been a sucker for blued guns, here's my Commander - out the door for $700 so you have $$$ for mags and ammo...
