You guys have saved me from many a mistake thus far and here I am with another dilemma.

I am looking for a long range shooter. There are three rifles which I can buy. All for exactly the same price (trading a SIG P220)

The first is a Browning BAR in .270 Leupold 3X9. With no picture til later.

A Remington 710 in .270

and a Yugo SKS

Any thoughts?

And a BIG +1 on building a long range precision rifle---- NOT a SNIPER rifle.
Dude - Don't kill a nitch market for us here in the PNW... LOL

We sell "S" word rifles all the time, we just don't market them on the internetz for all the Lefties to point their fingers at...

The "S" word is thrown about on all sorts of "kit" ( Oh yes, you know I went there ) for build requests coming through the door.

Discretion is the key - not ADVERTISING it in the Left's face...:D

Ineffable

Let me give you an example of what a 4" target at 660 yards looks like-- with a 25X spotting scope--

Target is small huh-- that's with a 25X scope--- at 660 yards-- what would it look like with a 3x--- you wouldn't see it-- not at 660 yards, not at 500 yards, not at 300 yards.

Just to get you thinking in the right direction-- and to dispel any dreams a granger and Hollywood movies. Not everyone can just pick up a rifle and shoot out that far. So take it serious and we'll get you pointed in the right direction.

PS KEEP THE SIG!

Plus one on everything except the Nightforce-- barf-- sorry bad experience. IOR would be a better choice for less money (IMHO of course).

Or you can have Terry Cross build you two like mine...

Although my SB scope was a tad more than 2K.

I've got a A5 stock on order for this rifle:

been on order for 5 months now :(

Ineffable-- I was just poking at you-- I'm sorry if I offended you-- it was not my intention. I just feel strongly against the whole hunting bad guys at 500 yards coming from a non LEO (which they wouldn't normally try anyways) or military personnel.
I am former LEO if that makes any difference (which it shouldn't) Nice weapons...want to trade?

Sorry my bad-- go rent Shooter and run to your favorite Smith and tell him you want a bolt action Barrett M82 rifle just like the one Marky Mark used in the movie!

Am I the only one that notices that stuff?

I think I have caught this subliminal message. Thanks, guys.

*literally laughing out loud*

That scene is classic. Why is he racking that bolt each time? LOL You know, they did so well with the mil dot usage too - and got that so far off...

I may have been the only one in the whole theater pointing out the fact that "paper patching" from a .50 caliber Barrett isn't going to match a direct bore fired, proprietary Chey Tac .416...LOL

Ah, that was funny. I need that this evening. Thanks JP

Sure that makes a difference-- thank you for serving.
Thank you for your kind words. As for your offer:
I'll give you a set of Badger scope rings, 20 MOA base, and a HS PRECISION "tactical" stock for your SIG. Now that is a fair trade. :D Literally

If the Scope Base is Badger Ord also, and the rings aren't some whacked out size, that's not a bad deal Ineff... depending on the condition and model of the HS Precision of course. If it's in two pieces, then I would shy away... LOL

Then you only need an action, a barrel and a scope to get into the realm you are talking about. All quality stuff there...

JD
I'm thinking a piecemeal kit starting with the rings is not in my best interest. Hey, I got an idea...I think I saw in a movie once where bad guys get free stuff just for point THEIR guns at people. Can I just do that? ;)

Pointing guns at people with guns--- yea I think you can do that---- one time. But don't make any plans after that. :D

The Rings are 30mm Badger low mount
The Base is Badger 20moa for a Remington short action
The HS is bedded-- and has a 4lbs "sniper" fill in the buttstock.
It has maybe 200 rounds through it.

But alas-- I have a action that I can put on it and a R5m barrel-- humm I think I'll have to reneg on that offer and built me another stick. :D
^ Should have taken it Ineff - That would have been a good trade for you...

I throw out nightforce as a habbit. any of the top end optics are going to do you good. Loppy Mk4LR, IOR, NF, March, Ziess, Swar. If you are looking for top of the line glass thoes are going to get you in the top of the line range price encluded.

I like nightforce because you can get so many different reticles in them. If you really have to have a high price tag then get a US Optics. Great scopes and Exreamly great scope prices.
US Optics makes some great glass-- under rated if you ask me. I had a ST10 that was built for CSGW-- it was a sweet scope but I traded it for a IOR 4-14 Flea Scope. Need the higher mag. If they made a fixed 14X scope I'd certainly jump on it.

They make a few with mag over 14x or do you want a stright 14x power?
Ok let me back up here a little bit. Can you shoot 500 yards with a stock rifle? Yes you can if you are willing to accept marginal accuracy at best. If you figure 18" wide for a human chest that is just over 3.3moa. 3moa shooting at 500 yards is some really good shooting. No stock rifle will get you that I don't think.

You can go the cheap route.

Remington 700 SPS varmint in 308 $550

Sell SPS stock............. +$100
Sell SPS Barrel............ +$150
Buy HS Stock..............-$590
Buy Krieger Barrel 1-10" twist SS #7 contour........... $280
Buy Bader Ord. MAXIMIZED SCOPE RAIL.................. $150.00
Buy Badger Ord. Medium Scope Ring .....................$168.00
Buy Leupold 8.5-25x50 Mark 4 LR/T........................$1,379.95
Blue Print Remington action $400
Jewell Trigger Remington 700, 40X with Safety 1-1/2 oz to 4 lb......$228.99

Total..............................................................$3495.95

Add another $500 to $1000 for a smith to put it all together. Granted you can save some money on the stock by buying a Bell & Carlson stock. Jewell Triggers are the best Timney will get you close and for less money. If you are selective on what you buy you can keep the price tag below $1500 or $2000.

This is not taking into account all the extras like case, bi-pod, reloading supplys if you reload ect......

They make a few with mag over 14x or do you want a straight 14x power?
Yea, I just want a fixed 14X---- ST14 they Mike (CSGW) said if he gets enough people that want them he can get USO to make a run of them-- but so far (year and a half) no joy. I think its a great in between scope-- you know when 10X isn't enough and 17X is too much. Bla bla bla.

I'm done buying variable scopes. I end up just leaving my Nikon Tactical (which you should add to your list of great scopes by the way-- The tactical line is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest of their line-- it's not just a revamp like what the variable MK4's are to Leupy-- so in other words the tactical line is as good if not better than a MK4 IMHO) on 10X-- and my S&B on it's highest setting anyways. I rarely shoot closer than 300 yards so I really don't need a variable. If the mirage is that bad that I can't see at 14X-- then lets face it-- it's too damn hot to be laying on the deck anyways! :D

Anyways-- back on topic. :)
Hitting a man sized target at 500 yards or 450 with a first round hit with a .270 (which is what we are talking about here)-- doubtful

If I were this guy I'd buy a 700P in .308-- adjust the trigger (cause they come with "adjustable triggers" now (they were always adjustable, but whatever)-- take off the buttpad-- mix in 4lbs of shot and some apoxy-- Put some good glass on it (IOR 10X-- MK4 10X-- ect) break it genitally (MHO) and within a very short time he'll be reaching out to 500 yards and hitting 4" pigeons all day long. Total cost 2.5K.

Weaver used to make a 15x40mm called the KT-15 It is not of the Ziess quality but the ones I have used are bright clear and very good scopes.
500yds??

I shot on range at 600 yrds with stock mi garand and mil ball.kept them in black.I think it was 47 out of 50 score.the sks no.any of the others except I would rather have a savage as it is very accurate out of the box.
how many are geared up for this 500 plus sniper shooting .someone has been reading to many books or watching to much TV.as a match target shooter thats one thing.to do that shooting consistently you need to spend long hours practicing.at the time I did.what bad guys.enemy troops??they drop a mortar rd and thats it.:rolleyes:youth!!
Ah yes. I see the abuse is going to haunt me for years to come. The point that I think gets lost here is that I wanted to know the fair trade value of above guns, and then I specified what I was looking for in my future long arm. All valid questions and especially wise of me to ask the pros, I think. Thanks to many of you, I didn't make a bad trade.

The other thing my wounded pride is asking me to address is that yes, I don't know much about rifles, but that should not suggest that I am incapable of shooting them with accuracy. I came straight out of the police academy among the top LE shooters in Washington State until I resigned in 93.
Point Taken.
