I have a 1911 Colt that was made in 11/1917. The gun was not loved, it spent may years locked up in a bag and forgotten.

One of the owners looked like he had huge sweaty hands because there are finger print stains on it now.

He obviously knew nothing about wiping off a gun.

My question is, is there any way to clean the surface with out taking off that nice 96 YO bluing.

Even if I could just knock down the yuck 10% it would look a lot better.

    Any advice?

my suggestion would be some soft flannel cloths and Kano Kroil. might also try some of the finest steel wool available an Kano Kroil. i cleaned up one of my father's rifles that is over 40 years old that was left unattended in his safe for about 15 years. had some minor surface rust on the metal. cleaned it up with Kroil and very fine steel wool. came out looking great.
