My brother in law is looking for a 357 revolver for HD and would appreciate any suggestions.

Initial consideration are Ruger GP100 and S&W 686. Anything else worth checking within same price range?

BTW, he wants a laser installed (Crimson Trace) so that is part of the consideration.

    Thank you.

That pretty much covers it unless he is interested in a used revolver. Then there's the Security and Speed Sixes from Ruger and an assortment of S&W's and some Colts. Although lasers would be a bit more scarce for some of them.

Both great choices. Have him make sure they fit his hand properly. He may want to check out one of the many "K" Frame S&W's if the 686 is too big.

    How about the S&W Nightguards?

    Thanks guys!

He is also planning on buying a Glock 19 (9mm) and a Sig 220 (.45) though like the revolver, they are not final yet and I can "influence" the list if there are better choices.

BTW, He already have two 12 ga shotguns and two .308 hunting rifles. Might try to talk him to adding a black rifle later :D

Ruger Speed Six or one of the other Sixes. Have to pick it up on the used market.

I personally have a 686 and I adore it, very nice shooting gun, but mine does have a trigger job.

Partial to the Glock 23's, but hey, a glock is a glock. When going with the Sig I would definitely go for a Sig 229 (.40) I own two, one that is Double Action only the other is Single double action, both shoot wonderfully, but the double action only provides a consistency that I am partial to.

Take a look at a Dan Wesson. Excellent trigger, very accurate, tougher than an anvil, and prices rather low. Not sure about lasers.

It's likely going to be hard to find Crimson Trace lasergrips for Dan Wesson revolvers. It's possible to install the "guts" of 1 in a set of rubber grips that does fit Dan Wesson but it's a lot of trouble to go to and it would be tedious to make sure it's aligned right. I'd stick with your initial choice of the Ruger GP100 and the S&W 686/686+. The 686+ is 7 shot L frame whereas both the 686 & GP100 are 6 shot.

S&W 686 is a good overall choice, the S&W 586 is the same pistol in blue instead of stainless steel and a bit less $$. I have a 586 and it is a keeper for life.

    My new favorite:

    S&W 19-3, there's just something about a vintage S&W wheel gun.

What are those speedloaders, I have to get some of them.

BTW, I am a big fan of the 19 as well. My 19-4:

I have a 586 and love it. My next .357 will be a 627, which holds 8 rounds.

The K frame and L frame grips are exactly the same. The rest of the L frame is beefier.

Look as police trade in 66's. Most have been shot with 95% Specials and are still very serviceable. Crimson Trace grips are available.
