Hello All,

I am from NC and just bought my first gun today. A Ruger SP 101 .38 special.

Very excited to be a part of this forum to hear opinions & to have some questions answered.

Welcome here.
Thanks again guys. Just wondering if any of you have an opinion on the question that I posted in the ammunition thread regarding the best ammunition for a .38 special that is for home defense.
best ammo for .38 spl

The best ammo for the .38 spl that I have EVER found is WW silvertip HP in a +P loading. If you have a Ruger the extra pressure is not going to be any problem. And Welcome here!
Welcome In!

Steve, welcome to the Forum. A little strange on your screen name since the Beatles were all about love and NOT about guns:eek: Anyway welcome to a home for gun lovers! About your .38 ammo- I like Speer Short Barrel Ammo in t
hat cal. The load is designed to preform in a 2" barreled gun as well as most will in a 6" barrel. Has the Gold Dot HP, this bullet is known for it's great performance. Again, Steve welcome+speak up:D To add-why would you buy a 101 in .38 rather than in .357?? Your missing out on a good defense load in the .357-125gr. JHP!!

I was looking for the .357 but they didn't have a used .357 at the gun shop that I went to. I really like the .38 though, being my first hand gun purchase I was probably a bit hasty. I fired it and really like it a lot.

My main concern is that a .38 special has enough power for home defense. I know I wouldn't have to ask that question if I would have waited for a .357. I am guessing though if I get the right ammunition for the .38 then it will be plenty of firepower.

Thanks again for your responses.
Welcome Steve,
The 38 special is a good defense pistol especialy for someone new to pistols. I expect if you would have asked for advice and expressed your experience many of us would have pointed you towards the firearm you purchased. It's safe and easy to operate with a round that will work fine in defense.
Welcome from Venezuela

Welcoem and glad to have you around! :D
