My local range has a "lead barrel" for firing high powered rifles? What is that?

I asked my range guy if I could fire my 30 06 there as someone else told me they didn't allow high powered rifles, but today the owner says that you can but it has to be fired not a lead barrel. What does that mean? How does it work? Any pics someone might be able to show me?

  2. That's a first. The only time I've purposely pulled a trigger on a weapon pointed at a barrel was in a clearing barrel. Shooting into lead sounds like a fine way to contaminate the immediate area.

You let this go without asking the owner? . .

I would only guess that he has a special shrouded range and bullet trap for high powered rifles, but only the 'owner' would know what he meant.

He didn't mean one of those sound-deadening tubes, like a big foamy culvert that you shoot from, did he? I saw pictures of a German range that had those and thought it would be a good idea on crowded ranges.

Ok guys, so I found out what it was. It's exactly what they say it is. A plastic barrel filled with lead, lmao. I shot my mosin and my new axis into it. Thanks for the suggestions. As far as why I never asked the guy before leaving, he was on the phone and he's kind of a douche.

    Damn, who woulda' thunk.

What is their normal backstop on the range. Milk Jugs with water?

Even my home range stops my .300 Win Mag's (and bigger).

    Have fun.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, this place is so low rent it isn't even funny. The barrel lane had no mover so I went to the next one to fire my revolver and it didn't work, so I went to the next, nothing. I kept going, 10 movers were out of order. Last time I was there the mover moved towards you when you hit it to move away and away when you hit the switch towards you.

At one point it got stuck at the end and either way I hit the switch it would move away,

Oh, and the fact that you have a home range is awesome.
