I have been wanting a lever action rifle for awhile. I really did lots of research before I decided on which one to get. I was going to start with a .22lr but just couldn't see paying almost $300 for a .22, yes I am a cheap bas(well you know the rest).

I decided on the Marlin 336 as it is easy to breakdown, and it is reliable and popular (lots of parts available). Oh and the cheap part. I have read enough to know about the problems with "Remlin" rifles. So I was looking for an older Marlin. I kept up with the local sale papers (you have to love living in Texas) but no one was giving up their .30-30. I did see one for $350 but it was sold by the time I contacted the owner.

On a whim I went by a local pawn shop and there she was.

It is a Marlin 30AW made in '97. It has a birch stock and cheaper sights than the standard 336. It has a little surface rust, bore is fine. $325. The one thing that stood out as I was looking at in the pawn shop was there was no wear on the loading gate.

I took her home and did a complete breakdown and cleaning, Lots of old dried oil to clean, and the original factory "yellow patch" on some parts.

Took her to the range today, This is my new favorite rifle, any one that has handled a lever action has to know what I'm talking about. I hate the sights as they cover most of the target at 100 yards, but that is easy to fix. Oh, and now there is wear on the loading gate :)

Awesome...I have been coveting a lever action for some time and that's a beauty. Do you think it has ever been fired?

As crazy as it sounds, I really don't think it was. The loading gate had no wear at all, I put 40 rounds through her and now I have worn the blueing off the very edge of the loading gate.

I can't be sure but I think I'm the only one to pull the trigger on a live round with it.

That is awesome. I bagged my first deer with a Marlin lever 30-30. It was my grandfathers rifle and I'm not sure of the exact model.

I guess you already know since it has side ejection,

you can mount a scope very easily. The pictures don't

do the Black Walnut stocks justice. My Marlin lever is also my

    favorite rifle.

The side eject is one of the main reasons I went with the Marlin. I am going to run it for awhile with iron sights to get better with them. I have peep sights on my other rifles, including my 10/22. I just don't shoot worth a dang with the normal ones.

I added a new 336 recently because I sold my original 30-30 20 years ago. This one goes to the first born grandson when I'm cold.

Probably the most popular brush rifle. I love mine. I bought a leather butt pad/cheek rest for mine and I am about to order a skinner ghost ring sight for it. Enjoy!

Great buy! Now DO NOT put a scope on it. Iron sights can be replaced if you do not like the ones on it.

I would of pick a Marlin 45/70 great rifle if you reload then you can control it for excample you could use 13gr. of unique a 350 or 405 lead bullet and a 10 year old girl could handlle it.Or load it up for bears.

I like the ghost ring on my Garand.

Maybe I'll try a ghost ring on my Marlin...
