i have in my possesion a sweet little rifle, a 1964 marlin model 39 carbine 22. I recently attended a gun show when i met an older gentleman showing a model 39. As he was showing me his, i noticed his rifle was exacty like mine, except it had an octagonal barrel, while mine was a smoooth circle. when i told him of this difference, he told me the rifle never came in a smooth barrel. Him telling me this has bugged me ever since.

Can anybody put my mind at ease?

In the beginning was the word. And the word was 39. And the 39 begat the 39A.

There is a difference. The Model 39 started manufacture with an octagonal barrel about 1922. Later they made some changes to the magazine tube. In 1939, they started making the 39A. Round barrel. Have 3 of them- one was bought by Mom for Dad- their first anniversary. My GRANDKIDS are still shooting it. Wonderful little rifles.

On a 39A, it would be marked 39A. And in 1964, the 39 had long been replaced by the 39A, the 39M, etc etc. What is the serial number on yours?

ESTRACK, is yours 39 a carbine? Marlin 39 carbines are fairly uncommon and were only produced for a couple years abd will have the word carbine written on the barrel. They also had a 3/4 length magazine tube. IIRC the carbines were built @1970 for 2 years. Are you maybe getting the model confused with a 39 Mountie?

    AHA!!!

A 39 Carbine and a 39 not same thing! There are more than a dozen variants in the 39/39A/39m/39A Golden/ 39A Centennial, etc. You could actually do a pretty impressive collection of just different Model 39s. The factory nickel plated ones stand out a lot!

Point being, as the old gent said, the Model 39 was not made in a round barrel- but your 39 CARBINE- which is a different model from a Model 39, was- as you well know, since you have one. The prefix Y does indicate 1964 manufacture- and by then, the Model 39 had long been out of production. The 39 Carbine is pretty scarce- congrats on having a nice bit of history!
