What would you guys recommend for home defense? Mossburg is $340 including pistol grip and shoulder stock. The Maverick is $180 and I would have to buy pistol grip for 30 or so. I want pistol grip. Is the quality difference worth the price difference? They seemed pretty much identical to me.

The Mossberg 500 and Maverick 88 are identical shotguns with the only real diffrence being the trigger assembly. The Maverick has the Remington style controls. If you dont mind this then by all means go for the Maverick. The Maverick is also owned by Mossberg and is really the same design. You should be able to find a better deal on the Mossberg then $340 is you look around. Arms list if another great place to look for pistol grips and you can get one for about $15 off there. 99% of the Maverick and Mossberg parts are interchangable between the 2 so you can't really go wrong.

You may not want a pistol grip with the Mossberg. It makes manipulating the tang mounted safety harder. The Maverick may be a bit better in that respect.

I'm not much of a fan of PGs on Shotguns, but if you are that is something to consider.

The cost difference of the Maverick is largely due to a lot of the Mexican manufacturing of parts for the factory in Texas. It saves on labor cost, but the design is just as deathkricket said, mostly Mossberg 500. Fender uses a similar strategy in cost savings by opening a guitar manufacturing plant in Mexico to make their standard Stratocasters and various other guitars that they offer, so that they can capture a segment of the market who would be priced out of a USA Standard version of the same guitars.

Get the maverick, mine has worked well for me and others on here will attest to that...plus you really can't beat that price...

Mossberg 500 to support U.S labor. Maverick 88 to save money.

I don't care much for pistol grips but if that's what strikes your fancy go for it.

I have an 8 shot Maverick 88. You will not find a high capacity maverick 88 for $180. Buds gun shop has the 8 shot maverick 88 for $230 plus FFL fee. My Maverick 88 has served me well.

I bought the 500, good gun but with a pistol grip the pump release is darn near impossible to push down without flipping the gun over and looking for it.

The biggest advantage to buying a Mossberg over a Maverick is the combo packages. For $50 more you get a second barrel. I don't like synthetic stocks for hunting. Most synthetic stocks are hollow. When you bump into a limb or use the stock to knock down brush the synthetic stocks make an unusual noise that I can't tolerate.

Mossberg or Maverick, eihter one will work well for you. I have Mossbergs in my collection that are old enough to collect Social Security, and i had a Maverick 88 for 17 trouble free years. For the money, i would say go for the Maverick. Even with buying a PG and an extra barrel, you will still pay less than you will for the same quality as the Mossberg. See if any pawn shops or gun shops in your area have any used shotguns or barrles for the model 500. They will fit on the Maverick.

If you choose a maverick 88 and decide you want a barrel later on eBay is a great place to find a used barrel. Sometimes you can find a new barrel on eBay for less. I have a graded wingmaster I wanted a skeet barrel. I found a used barrel for $100 including shipping. Finding a skeet barrel for an old wingmaster is like finding hens teeth. The best price I could find on a barrel locally was $250.

the Maverick 88 is pretty much the Mossberg 500 with some minor changes in the trigger and the safety. most of the parts for a 500 will interchange with the 88.

i am on my second Maverick 88 and have put many rounds through it so far with not one issue. it seems to digest anything i care to feed it. the previous one was the same way.

the Maverick 88 is a solid and well built shotgun and though inexpensive, they perform well and seem to hold up well over time and lots of rounds put through them. IMO, i think a person would be hard pressed to find a better shotgun than the Maverick 88 at the same price NIB.

I Agree! Never had any problems out my Maverick. Inexpensive but reliable. Looking to treat my Dad to a shotgun thinking either a Maverick , 500 Mossberg or Remington 870
