Well Matt is right, I have both the 870 and a recently found Mosserg 500, the 500 does have a following but for what it's worth and the difference in price I would go with an 870 every time. Fit, finish, materials and spares availability (at least here) makes it a no brainer, goes for double if you live in a part of the world where you are going, or have to use one for defence.......

It is what it is IMO. The Maverick can be had for around $147 at Wal Mart here. The main line of Mossbergs is good, and one should be more than happy with the basic 500 model for a decent price. Shotgun manufacturers have been more competitive lately with lower than standard lines. Question is will you be happy with this in the long run or just jump at the opportunity to scratch that itch. You won't be able to modify your Maverick like you would the basic 500 model. I just got my 870 HD this week for $269 after shopping around for a shotgun for almost six months. I'm very happy.

Sometimes you get more than you pay for. Some shotguns are overpriced because of name. There are many standard Mossberg 500 shotguns in service in Iraq. They put them through more than any of us would. Also the Mossberg 590A1 has the same receiver and internals as the 500.

The Maverick is basically the same shotgun as a 500. fin24000 You did well.

it's hard to build a truly BAD pump shotgun. There just isn't much to them. The difference in price DOES get you better quality, though.

Take a look at the Norinco 982 with Ghost Ring Sight. They are an excellent deal for the money. All of the 870 accessories will fit. They run about $200.

Machined extractor & ejector
Metal trigger guard
Nice set of GRS that would cost you about as much as the shotgun
High Carbon steel receiver, thicker than the 870
7+1 capacity with tube ext
870 parts will fit but not the barrel

Dont bring up dead threads. Make a new one if you have a question. Stop by the introductions and tell us about you. I own a Maverick 88 and they are not chrome lined.

Fin, get what you can afford. If you can afford to wait, get better. I have owned two Mossy 500's, and never a problem. I sold/traded them for "names"(870), not that I would trade my 870 for a Mossy. I also have a Win. 1300 Defender, not too shabby, quite nice in fact. To each his own.
Recently, my spousal unit demanded that I take her to Gander's to look at t-shirt's on sale. After buying her the t's, I asked her to check out the guns. I , after some looking and comparison, bought her a Mossy 20ga. pump gun for dove. A win-win situation.
Get what you can live with, but listen to some of these guys. Experience is a harsh teacher.

Agreed. However, this thread is at least 9 months old. Let it die.
