So I am sure many of you out there have done this but what are the steps required to refinish the stock on a mosin? What finish works best for you? How long did it take?
    Thanks

Refinishing the stock is no different than any other wood refinishing. Remove the existing finish, sand stock to remove any rough spots and refinsh. Wood stains, tung oil or shellac are popular finishes. Original Mosin finish is a red shallac I believe. Only word of caution is to be careful not to remove any arsenal marks or cartouche marks on the wood...they give any Mosin extra character.

Denatured alcohol removes shellac. It instantly turns it liquid and can be wiped off.

After that a light sanding will remove residue and it can be stained or re-shallaced

JonM has done a beautiful job on his NAGANT. I didn't know about about the alcohol, good tip. You can also steam out dents in the stock. If you're interested in details just ask.

I refinished mine keeping the natural wood look. I used a clear poly and and "sanded" between coats with 0000 steel wool. The hardest part was getting ALL of the old cosmoline out of the wood. Spent 5 hours steaming it out. If you don't get it all out it is going to bleed into whatever finish you choose.

Just finished one this weekend also keeping the natural wood look (I'll post pics later this afternoon).. I sanded with 0000 steel wool only and hand rubbed with BLO.. Also mounted a scope to it (scout mount style)... 91/30's lend themselves to this without having to modify the weapon in any way.. Just remove the rear sight and install 22 high mount style scope rings to the base..
