Hey guys, I was wondering who here has a Mosin and what you've done to it (if anything). My buddy picked one up a while ago and restored very nicely. It looked like a fun project , and I am planning to ceracoat a 1911, so I thought I would pick one up to fool around and practice on. My intention was to simply refinish the stock and ceracoat the barrel (mainly just to practice).

Well, as with most things I do, it got a little involved. The barrel was beat up, and not very well machined it the first place, so I spent quite a bit of time just trying to smooth it all out. Then I came across the ArchAngel stock. It was a little pricey for a cheap rifle build but, I helped out my neighbor and did some work on his house so he ordered the stock for me. Unfortunately I don't like the scout scope set-up, so I had to drill and tap the receiver for a rail. Also needed to cut the handle off the bolt and make a new one to clear the rail. It got a little bit more involved then I was planning but, I like the journey, and it's fun. Not done yet but I figured I'd start a thread and see if any one has suggestions before I finish. I've only been shooting for about 18 months and this is my first gun project but I enjoy working with my hands and am willing to try anything.

Here is what a stock Mosin looks like if there is anyone who doesn't know what they look like.

Here it is when test fitting the stock:

I mounted a scope I had just to make sure the rail was straight:

Then I cut the handle off the bolt and drilled it out for a new one:

Once it was installed I cut it to the desired length, reattached the ball on the end, and gave a little polish.

So, that's how far I've gotten. I plan to thread the barrel and install a brake and then Ceracoat it and mount a scope.

    Anyone have scope suggestions?

    Thats some nice work.

My preferred optics are trijicon and nightforce. Cheaper end vortex and nikon.

My work lies more in refinishing....

Made all the fittings from brass sheets with a dremel grinder and hand files

That looks nice. My buddy has one that he did a beautiful job on. I was planning on simply refinishing this one but I got a little carried away. I'm relatively new to firearms but I like to build things and can do pretty much anything myself. I figured since this was pretty cheap it would make a good project. I really just want to ceracoat something before I spray my brand new 1911. I picked up an RIA compact that I want to look something like a Sig Scorpion when I'm done.

Couple possibilities, one time at a gun show id seen a .35 Remington Italian Carcano with a hand made Mannlicher stock, the bolt safety the same, but the split bridge was filled in and the bolt handle was moved to the rear creating a bridge to mount a rear scope base, it took awhile to figure out just what the rifle was originally as I remember it took a detachable steel box magazine of some sort.

That's pretty interesting. I kind of wish I had seen that before. Welding would have added another aspect to the project.

    Thanks for posting.

I prefer a mosin unmodified in issued form. That said. I don't blame you for using one as a cost effective project. It looks like you are an accomplished machinist by seeing the high quality of your work.

My only complaint is a few more gun porn pics are needed. :)

Thanks. I'm kind of at a standstill right now. I need to order a few parts and the ceracoat. As soon as I progress on the project I'll be sure to post some updated pictures.

I was actually debating getting the scope next and shooting it before I go any further.

Not too much in the way of progress but, I decided to go ahead and file off the dovetail for the rear sight base. Anyone have suggestions for filling in the pin holes they used to secure the sight? I was planning on just filling them with solder unless someone has a better idea.

What did you use to polish the bolt and handle to get it looking that nice?

Wet sanded in increments from about 500 to 1200 grit and then polished with Mother's Mag Polish.

Thank you. I'm ordering the comp and a die to thread the barrel tonight. Paint should be here tomorrow so, hopefully next week some time I'll have made some more progress toward finishing it.

I am in search of a scope mount and not finding one that I really like.

I have a 91/30 and plan to shorten my barrel about 3-4 inches. This will get rid of my need for the rear sights. I don't really have the equipment to grind down the rear sight weaver rail. I was wondering if anyone has seen a scope mount that uses the weaver base and is drilled into the receiver.

I don't really want to use a long eye relief scope but may end up doing that.

I didn't really look into it since I didn't want to go with a scout scope but, pretty sure the rear sight dovetail is 3/8". So a 3/8" to Weaver rail should work, and then you can mount whatever scope you want. Unless you plan on modifying the bolt you're going to have use a scout set-up, otherwise the bolt handle won't clear the scope. There are also a couple of scope mounts that attach to the rear sight (not the rail). You just remove the sight leaf pin and it mounts in place of that.

If you want to keep it simple you can just leave the rear sight and replace the front sight. There are a few options out there for mounting the front sight on a cut barrel. One uses your old front sight and the other is a complete replacement.
