And who says this place cannot be educational?

Never heard the term- Mondegreen? Well, it is the term for a garbled quote- usually of a poem or song lyric. It started with a Scot poem- (mis)quoted as:

    Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands,
    Oh, where hae ye been?
They hae slain the Earl o' Moray,
    And Lady Mondegreen

However- that last line was SUPPOSED to be:
"And laid him on the green"

A few classic Mondegreens - From Bad Moon Arising- "There's a bathroom on the right...." And Hendrix- in Purple Haze- does NOT say "Scuse me while I kiss dis guy..."

And I once knew a young woman who thought Arlo Guthrie sang about
    "Coming into Los Angeles-
Bringing in a couple of geese..."

So- you got a Mondegreen to add to the list?

    Elton John:

"Hold me close young tiny dancer".

    NOT

"Hold me close up Tony Danza".

Not even our National Anthem is immune-

    "Jose can you see...."

or even the Pledge of Allegiance-

    "One naked, individual..."

This song just might set the record for garbled quotes. In fact even if you don't garble them ... what is he singing about!

    MacArthur Park - Richard Harris

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
    It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance

Between the parted pages and were pressed
    In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain

I don't think that I can fake it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again, oh noooooo

I recall the yellow cotton dress
    Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
Birds like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers, by the trees

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain

I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again, oh noooooo

There would be another song for me
    For I will sing it
There would be another dream for me
    Someone will bring it

I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life, you'll still be the one

I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky

And after all the loves of my life
Oh, after all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you - and wondering why

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain

I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
    Oh noooooo, o-oh no-ooooo

    In A Gadda Da Vida

The song In A Gadda Da Vida was actually "in the garden of eden" but it got so mangled by the singer that everyone thought it was in a gadda da vida. The band just went with it and the rest is history. :)

    Blinded by the light,
    Wrapped up like a deuce
    Another roller in the night

Often heard as wrapped up like a douche, another runner in the night.

Dope+mean spirit =John Lennon. He intentionally sang "Baby you're a rich man" in a way that was offensive to Brian Epstein. For the kicks. I dare not recite it here :)

the lead singer was talking about the garden of eden the night before the song was written, and it came out as In A Gadda Da Vida. his buds were busting his balls about it the next day, and they used the phrase in the song.

"Saturday Night Special" by Lynrd Skynrd.

    What it is:

    "It's a Saturday night Special,

Got a barrel that's blue and cold."

    Most common mistake on it:

    "Mr. Saturday night Special.

Got a barrel that's just 2 inches long."

In late 1963 all of us kids were trying to figure out Louie, Louie. There was a lot of whispering in the hallways, kids swearing it goes like this... What! Did he really say that? Even the FBI couldn't figure out the lyrics. You can google the writer's original lyrics but someone forgot to give them to The Kingsmen!

Yep. It is "Dude looks like a lady". It was a jab at the glam rockers. Rumor was it was directed at Vince Neil because of the heavy eye makeup.
