Sorry for the late reply now it's 5.20 PM here.
All the deer species get a run on a hot plate, crockpot, roasted etc.
Pigs do depending on where they're taken, goats do get taken for a feed as do rabbits and hares.
Ducks and Magpie Geese, quail are also taken and eaten as well.
Backstraps get taken off the Buffalo, scrub cattle and camels and made into steaks, jerky or pies.
A lot of pigs get shot and left because they can eat anything from bulbs to carrion so it's safer to leave them and move onto the next mob.

You are probably aware that a .22 Magnum is smallest legal cartridge we can use in Maine for deer. I personally have never used it, but would not fault anyone that does. Just have to keep the shots close and aim for a good kill shot. The following list is the calibers I have been using for the last several years. I used a 30-06 for pretty much everything for a long time.

    Deer:
small bore- .204 Ruger (head and neck shots)
    big bore- 450 Bushmaster
    all around- 30-06

    Black Bear:
    Small bore- .223
    big bore- 450 BM
    all around- 30-06

    Moose:
    Small bore- .243
    big bore- 450 BM
    all around- 30-06

I’d be a little terrified going after a moose with a 243. I’d definitely want a 44 or a 454 on my hip if I was doing that!

I was way up in the County about 4 years ago on a moose hunt, the older French Canadian guide who was helping us get one, told me a 243 is what he uses sometimes. I have killed deer with the 243, and it works very good on them. We had 30-06 rifles on the moose hunt.

    Still, I don’t know- I’d rather have a 270, 30-06 or 300 Win Mag than a 243

Well... If I had to hunt deer for meat to eat,
and all I had was a 22, I could do it.
But I don't and choose not to.

As far as the "poacher argument:
    That's just BS !
    If poachers are the problem,
Need to deal with the poachers - not the cartridge!

Back when i was a young risk taker, I would shoot mule deer with my 10/22, head shots.
I dont recall scoring a hit without dropping the animal but I stopped doing it for some reason.

    I've used .50 cal roundball.
    100gr FFg.
    Kills deer dead.
    Doesn't tear em up either.
But........IMHO it doesn't turn the lights off as fast as a HP rifle.

.24 cal is my state min.
But we also have a case spec........min there is 1.16"

So I could run a cool little Contender rifle in .256 win...............just sayin'.
Idea is to try 85gr Nosler BT's up close.

Pops has a TC Custom shop rifle bbl but the stock is a lefty Fajen.
Hasn't shot it, thinkin bout just going over and buying it off him

Well, she shouldn't be carving her initials on the moose.
