With the availability of powder what it is today, there are several old-timers that were used effectively for many years.

For mid-range, target loads ONLY, some very popular handgun powders of the past were.

    Bullseye,
    700X
    Red Dot
    Green Dot
    Unique
    Alcan Al-5

You may need to dig out, or borrow, an older reloading manual to find data for these, (Or e-mail the manufacturer) but one helluva lot of big matches were won in the past using these powders.

My dad used the old Hercules (now Alliant) trifecta of Bullseye, Unique and 2400 for decades. Those three powders will cover most handgun needs quite well. It's where I started and one could still do much worse, even with all the new stuff out there. Locally, Alliant powders have the advantage of being noticeably cheaper than many alternatives as well.
