Hey all, as some of you may recognize - I'm always looking at buying new guns.
Right now I'm looking at a Marlin 25MN, used but in alright condition. I don't mind it used just cause of my purposes.

My concern is this: it uses .22 Magnum ammo. Obviously .22lr is the popular type, and I know that the magnum is more powerful and has better range and muzzle velocity, that's not the problem; the problem is ammo availability and cost.
I havn't seen one gun shop advertise .22 Magnum ammo! Is it really hard to find or what? Also does anyone know if its much more expensive than .22lr? Is the magnum ammo worth the effort of finding and paying for it too?

I'm not heart-set on this gun, I just see the opportunity. I don't want to pay a ton for .22 ammo though, and availability is always a plus!

    Thanks again!

Just about any store that sells ammo I've found 22 WMR. It is a bit expensive compared to 22LR. But it has it's uses. I love it for small furry woodland creatures. I've heard some say that the 17HMR will replace it but I can't see how. The 17 is a nice little round but I can't see it replacing anything.

My father in law has the same rifle you are talking about. It's a really nice shooter. A great addition to any shooters collection:)

You WILL pay more for ammo. Have never seen "bulk" 22 mag the way you see 550 round boxes of cheep 22 LR. Most shops have some 22 mag.

Depends on how much you want to shoot. DO NOT try shooting 22 LR in a magnum firearm.

.22WMR is easily found. It is more $ than .22lr, but so is everything else.

WalMart has 50 round boxes for $10. And Cabelas website has 250 round boxes of ballistic tips for like $65 I think.

I recently picked up a 22mag and I love it. Sure it costs a little more to shoot then my 22lr but it's still cheaper then anything else. I can pick up ammo at wally world for $10/50 any day of the week.

I don't recall ever going to someplace that sells ammo and asking for .22WMR and being told they didn't carry it or have it in stock. It is probably my favorite round, but I know I am biased. A .22WMR was my first rifle.

We live in an age where you can get anything from just about anywhere via the Internet. If you can't find it in the stores go online.

I would strongly suggest using CCI. CCI HP Maxi mags, Gamepoints, and V-max all shoot well. Remington 33gr accu-points are terrible as are most solid 40gr.

Thank for the tips, I'll look into it. On further looking I have found some, but selection is way less than LR.

I also found cci mini-mag lr. There is no CCI .22 Mag or WMR, just he mini-mag. I'll ask the guys there when I go, but if anyone here wants to chime in!

    Thanks again.

CCI's .22WMR is called the "Maxi-Mag". There are a few different bullet types for it. My 25MN loves the regular bullet, but hates the "TNT" bullet!
The .22WMR can be superbly accurate, but is too expensive for just plinking. It is more a specialised hunting round - great for small critters up to 150 yards.

If you really want to 'plink' more, get the .22LR Marlin rifle. All Marlins are good guns!

I picked up a 25M with a synthetic stock today at the local gun show. Very good shape. I am now trying to decide which scope to put on it. I have a 4x16x40 with AO and a 3x12x40 with AO.

    Gamepoints are not Maxi Mags...

Mine were NOT 'gamepoints'. Maybe they are now, back then (this was some years back) they were a variation of MaxiMag.

JTJ, I use the 4-12X40AO on both my 25MN and 17V Marlin rifles. On the .22LR rifles, I generally prefer the 3-9X40 though. I find I use the 6X setting most often around 50 to 75 yards. I have both these rifles set up as identically as possible, to minimise the 'training curve' - same rifle other than caliber.
And still very similar to the 25M and later .22LR rifles - all follow the same basic pattern.
You just can't go wrong with Marlin!

I should have mentioned it is a 22 mag. My wife's 17M2 has the same 4-16x40 on it and I am leaning that way. The reticle is a mill dot set at 10x so I probably wont go higher than that. It will more than likely stay in the 4-6x range. Need to pick up some rings and ammo.

Marlin 25MN...the rifle that started my Marlin Addiction.

Most precise rifle I currently own.

Tune 'em right, they'll dot the eyes of crows at 100 yards.

Best mods...trigger job, pillar bed, and add a second stock/action screw.
    It's all you'll ever NEED.

Second screw mod w/ pillar bedding.

Use 50-grain Federal Game-Shoks for 'yote, good out to 150 yards so far :)
