I know I already asked about the bargain brand, but let's just make a complete guide. I only know a few low and the high end brands.
Taurus- Brazilian hit and miss bargain brand. Basic models are well equipped
American Tactical imports- American based with factories in Asia, Fairly reliable and well equipped
Rock Island- American based, and reliable. Not as well equipped.
Colt- first makers of 1911s and considered one of the best.
SIG Sauer-German made, pricey, but considered a work of art
That's most of what I know for sure. Your turn.

Is Springfield Armory not considered one of the top brands? And Para Ordinance?

That's just what I know in fair detail. If it's not there, I haven't looked into it.

The only problem is someone has to maintain the list.

RIA was a POS a few years back, but seem to have changed for the better.
Colt has had problems in the past.
Other brands would remain at the "best" part of the list.

And as with cars, one lemon should not determine how a complete brand is, but it does and will affect consumer confidence and purchases (especially if posted in a forum).

When at a dealer looking for a car, I also look in the garage area. If the same model is being turned in for work from different people, then maybe it gets crossed off my list.

Now using that logic, ask a gunsmith what brands they are doing most repairs on.

Extreme High End ($2000+): Wilson Combat, Nighthawk, Ed Brown, Les Baer, various custom setups

Medium-High End ($1-2K): Dan Wesson, Springfield, Colt, Kimber, Sig, STI, S&W

Basic ($600-1000): Springfield, Colt, Kimber, Sig, STI, S&W, Ruger, Taurus, Remington, Para Ordnance

Budget (Under $600): Springfield, Taurus, STI, Remington, Para and Ruger all offer models that toe the line of this price point. Then you've got your true budget models, of which RIA might be the only one worth mentioning. There are a handful of others (Auto Ord, Armscor, Chuck Daly, etc) I just don't know a whole lot about them.

Not a complete list for certain, but close enough I'd imagine.

That's probably the most detail most would need. I haven't heard of many others. I applaud you kind sir!
