im disapointed :( finally broke down and bought a set of rifle length Magpul MOE handguards for my RRA national match A2 rifle with free float tube. but the magpuls dont fit around the tube near the front sight base :(

at least the mini rail i got for em fits to the a2 guards it came with. now i can put a bipod on it. i really wanted those handguards to go with the prs stock

Do you have or can you get a picture. I've put 3 (2 midlength and 1 rifle length) on rifles and haven't had a problem. The MOEs will even fit over the gas system on a LWRC which has a much larger o.d. than a DI tube.

I have never seen a inner free float tube like that. Is the front of the tube not connected to the FSP?

The heat shield isnt the issue. Its the design of the plastic pieces that clip into the front endcap. Magpul only makes that one rifle handguard.

Its a true free float tube. Doesnt touch the barrel at all or the fsb. I routinely shoot sub 3 inch 7-10 shot strings at 300 yards with it open sights.

Ill prolly just stick em on my pencil barrel upper

And that's a RRA? Federal Match? What's your zero? (Do/can you even zero open sights?)

Ya rra national match a2. The barrel is a wilson stainless air gauged and cryo treated. I asked them to bead blast the stainless to kill glare thats why its greyish looking.

My zero is 200yds and yes you can zero open sights. The clicks are .25 moa. I use handloads 69grn sierra matchking bthp over varget. Im thinking 24 grains of varget but i would have to consult my book to be sure.

At 100 yds shots are pretty much one hole groups. The purpose is to compete in open sight matches. I know i cant use the magpul stuff and have to convert it back to a2 service rifle for such things. But i like the magpul gear for just general shooting.

Is that front hand guard cap attached to the free float tube? If not, couldn't you just replace it with a standard round one to make the hand guard fit?

From the looks of the picture, it is what's causing the problem. Is that not the case?

I guess to me it looks like it's touching the front cap which looks like it is touching the FSP. What about the gas tube, it runs through the cap as well, correct? I keep looking at the pics and am having a hard time figuring out how it all works w/o touching the FSP.

The front end cap is attached to the free float tube. Its very very tight getting the standard handguards on and off.

With a round cap there wouldnt be enough room to get the handguards on or off.

The gas tube has a relief cut in the top of the ff tube from the fsb back partway till the tube bends upwards from the barrel.

You can lay it side by side with a ar15a2 and the only external diff is the peep sight and the color of the barrel.

I like the idea. I had just never seen it and was unsure of how it worked.

Will it allow you to switch to a round cap?

it works very very well. but the handguards arent really like regular milspec. i got the thermo-molded version which is much more rigid and reinforced than standard a2 guards without the heat shield. they designed those because the regular milspecs were snapping and cracking under heavy sling pressure

dunno. but i think the round version would be too tight to the ff tube to put any handguard on.

So the MOE doesn't fit the triangular end cap, Jon? Or it's just too busy at the FSB on yours? I know it fits the round one since that's what my Daniel Defense has but I've read it will also fit the triangular.

Just not enough room. The design of the parts that lock into the endcap arent the same as a regular handguard.

Hmmm, that's got me wondering since Magpul says the MOE fits triangular end caps. I never tried it so can't say first hand.

My BCM w/ the black MOE has a triangular cap. I think JonM said it was more of a space thing. The freefloat tube that it has uses some of the room inside the cap not allowing enough room for the MOE tabs that go inside the cap.

Thanks for clearing that up, MJ! I'm tempted to put MOE midlengths on my ArmaLite which has the triangular end cap.
