Occasionally, I run across gunnies saying that many of their problems are magazine related. Wherever my belief came from I have long forgotten, but I hold that Wilson has the lead as the highest overall functionality and reliability of any brand out there, particularly with their new Elite Tacticals. Canebrake recently posted his favoring the Tripp Cobra, but do not recall the why of it.

Is there one brand that you guys hold above another for our 1911's to stake your life on, and WHY; why do you feel as you do?

Wilson, based on experience. Have yet to have one go bad on me, are very durable. Several good brands out there, comes down to what good brand you build your own confidence in.

It's been awhiloe, but when I was big into IPSC matches Shooting Stars (Chip McCormick) were the most popular--not sure if that's still true today, but they always worked flawlessly for me.

Very good article from a man that makes 1911s for professionals who hunt other men. Other good info on his website also.

The good sherriffoconee will be along shortly to scold me about posting an article that mentions 8 round mags.:)

What's wrong with 8rd mags? I had trouble right off the bat with the kimber mag that came with the gun. Then I bought wilson's and they behave much better.
One complaint I have about kimber is sending it out with one.....crappy.....7rd magazine.

The 1911 was designed for 7 round mags. To get 8 rounds in the same physical space required changing the JMB design and as such introduced another variable in the reliability equation.

As far as the "best" mags - there probably isn't a single best for every gun. I've had 1911s that liked particular brands more than others. All of my mags are Wilson, Chip McCormick, Tripp, and Colt and I always find that my guns like one of them. Find the mag the your gun likes...

Wilsons and Tripp Cobras are the best IMO. That's all I use.

    Mags

My Dan Wesson had the same problem with its factory mags since switching to Wilson not a single problem

Novak & Chip McCormick work best in my 1911, but this is probably a very gun-specific issue. I will say that Novaks has given me some excellent customer service in the past as well.

Yes. I find mags that work with my weapon, regardless of who makes them, and when they run 100% of the time, THAT is when I buy a bunch of them, test them and the ones that are 100% reliable I trust me life with.

Anyone that buy's "brand X" and trusts their life to them without doing their own testing is asking for really bad outcomes.

Facts being facts - if you have an $8 mag that is 100% reliable, and a $50 mag that is 80% reliable, what are you going to carry??

When I purchased my 1911 back in the early 90's there as a sale going on for Colt 7 and 8rd mag at Ajax Grips. I bought about 20 of each for a total of 40 mags. The 7rd were $4.50 and the 8rd were $6.00. To this day I have never had a problem with any of them. 100% feedability and realiability.

I've had good luck with Chip McCormick's in my Springfields.
Haven't tried any other brands yet.

I' have always used Wilson Combat ever since my IPSIC days. As soon as I' get a 1911 I' ditch the factory mags and buy a few Wilson's.

I use Shooting Star mags mostly and have been trouble free. I recently bought some Wilson mags too and I do really like them. I can't say one is better than the other as they have both been working flawlessly.
