Seems to me , two things take priority here..!
    1-maternal instincts ..!

    2-loyalty to ownership..!

Hopefully , I never need my shadow to make that choice...! Eeeeek..!

Our Yellow Lab-Golden Retriever mix is very protective of my wife,, a gang of thugs could come up to me and he'd just look at me like,, " Now what ",, but it is nice to know that he'll watch her while I am not home.

We have a dachshund that will rip your head off if you look at my wife cross eyed. My mutt would probably give you a high five if you hit my wife.

A dog should not bare teeth at his master like this for any reason. If he hasn't been hit before, you have a major misunderstanding. If he has, I am not going there. Sorry dude, you brought it up.

My mom used to babysit some kids and she had a Great Dane at the time. One time one of the kids dad came to pick her up and that dog wouldn't let him in the house those were her kids and nobody was gonna mess with them.

That same dog that wouldn't let adults near the kids would put up with all manner of abuse from the kids. Abuse isn't the proper word because the kids were very young. They would lay on her, try to ride her, dress her up, she had unlimited patience with those kids, they were hers and God help anybody who might mess with them!

    303,

Obviously he or she does not like any signs of violence. Will the dog do the same if your wife or others threaten you?
Has he or she ever attempted to bite you other than give warning?
Obviously it seems he or she has had an experience that contributed to this behavior. Even if it was teasing violence.
