What's the difference between an m4 and a ar15. I plan to buy a m4 from stag arms

Technically an M4 is a military weapon capable of fully automatic fire, an AR-15 is semi-auto. In practical terms, however, a civilian M4 is just a short barrel carbine version of the M16/AR-15 platform.

It's pretty much like Jpyle said. The old Armalite company designed the AR-15 (which stands for ARmalite 15 - their 15th gun design) then sold the manufacturing rights to Colt. The first rifles Colt supplied to the military were stamped Colt AR-15 but later when the military accepted the rifle it was renamed as the M16. Those first AR-15s were full auto but today the term is a generic one for civilian and LE semiautos.

Anyway you can call your Stag an AR-15 or M4 or M4gery if you like. And parts designed for any of those should work in your rifle. Except for legal reasons you can't get parts that would change your rifle to full auto or burst (or a few other controlled parts).
