I need a good safe recipe for reloading my m1garand. I've read all kinds of info on powders, bullet weights and primers. Imr 4895 with a 168gr bullet and a winchester lr primer best duplicates m78 ball. Any suggestions?

Morning! I don't load 168 grainers for my Garands but according to Hornady's 7th edition's garand data section:

    IMR4895 with a 168gr buillet:

    Start: 39.6 gr
    Max: 47.1 gr
    Max C.O.L. - 3.240

Start low, work your way up and have fun!

What would you recommend for a bullet weight?

My favorite load that is very accurate and a good deer load if you ever want to use the Garand to hunt with is 46 gr. of IMR 4895 with a 150 gr. Hornady Interlock bullet. CCI 200 primer.

    Hogan,

The new Hornady Manual has a section specific to loading the M-1 Garand. Gunnuts information is right on the money. But normal hot factory 30-06 hunting ammunition should not be fired through the Garand. Could cause damage to the operating rod.

IIRC Sierra's manual has one as well at the Lyman. Not to sure about the Lyman though.

    hogan,

I load a ton of 150gr fmj's and 145gr tracers over 46 gr of Varget. That load is more accurate than me but it's great for culling the paper and bowling pin herds around here.. I trim cases to 2.484 and crimp with a Lee FCD.

Watch your head space. I have 2 Garands that head space about .010 long. They are safe to shoot but I had to adjust my sizing die so that the primer wouldn't back out. I can't shot these loads in my 1903A3. Bolt barely closes.

I find that my Garands like Imr 4895, Imr 4064 and Varget.

According to lee second edition, varget has the same burn rate as imr4895, amd is one higher than h4895. So why aren't there more recipes that utilize varget? it is one of the most versatile powders. My other wonder is will my m1a suffer the same fate as my garand if fired with hot loads, considering that the m1a action is based on the garand action?
