    M14/M1A referance pics (pic heavy)

Right before I was sent down range, I finished up a couple of M14 synthetic stocks, along with a pair of handguards, and since I gotta leave um behind for awhile, decided to snap a few pics of them whilst on the rifles.
I'm not the best camera guy, but hopefully some of the pics will help as a reference for others interested in the M14/M1A.

Both stocks started out with the selector lever holes just like this one...

Since neither of these are capable of select fire, I do not need the holes there, as it is just a fast an easy way for mud, blood, and crud to find it's way right smack on top of the trigger group.

After running them( stocks only minus metal buttplate/rear sling swivel assembly) through the dishwasher, I prepped the inside of the holes by roughing it up a little with sandpaper, used a few small screws to act as a sort of "rebar" for the fill to hold onto, built up both sides with 100mph tape to act as dams, or "forms"....and filled them up with JB weld, using a small wooden dowel to tamp it in gently and force out any gaps that might form in the filled area of the holes proper.
Let um harden overnight, strip off the tape, and go to work shaping them up with sand paper until I got the shape where I wanted it. After runnin them through the dishwasher again, I let um dry well, and hit them up with Krylon "camo brown" spray paint. (Black paint for the hg's to give it a little two-tone action).........
Heres how the area turned out on both......

Note: Notice that one of the stocks has no checkering to it. I believe that it is an early production synthetic prior to the addition of checkering, as this specific stock showed no signs of ever having any checkering that I could find. It is also lighter in weight as compared to the others I have handled before as well.....

Next up is a comparison pic of a std castle nut/flash hider/front sight assembly vs an SEI gas lock hooded front sight unit/Vortex direct connect flash hider.....
I lined them up as best as I could to show the difference in OAL, and sight radius, as this comes up often when folks are looking into buying an M14 type.

and a comparison of a rifle with an ARMS 18 vs one without....

Note the difference between the 2 receivers. The one without the ARMS mount is SAI, while the rifle that sports the ARMS18 is an M14S Norinco.

    More comparison pics......
OAL differences concerning 22in, 18in, and 16in bbls.....

Another pic of the rifles sitting in thier newly finished furniture...

SAI M1-A1 Bush rifle at top sports all GI parts, minus bbl, and of course receiver.

The other is a build with M14S Norinco receiver, Criterion chrome lined bbl, and a mix of GI, SEI, OEM, and Sadlak parts.

Pics of the wife's M1A with plenty of GI parts...

Hopefully some of the visual references, and comparisons will help folks looking into the M1A/M14 rifle, and also help in determining which type/or model that best suits them.

At the same time, I must admit that I am already missing my rifles......

Already planning my next build. another "shorty" using an LRB M14SA receiver.

I compared it to the std flash hider in low light, and it does reduce muzzle flash a tad better.

It cannot come out of alignment, does not need to be reamed, and amounts to less overall small parts. Also makes it very quick and easy to take on and off.

BTW.....a plastic M16 muzzle cover just fits over it, but it is a bear to get off.

Overall, I would say that it is working out rather well, and would recommend it along with the gas lock front sight.

My next build will also have one, but this time, I am going with the dovetail version, and an SEI tritium "bar style" front sight arrangement.

Note: I thought long and hard if I wanted to go with the LRB M25 receiver for this build, but decided on the M14SA instead, as I have faith in the Bassett mount if I decide to add optics to the equation.

Thanks CA357. A nice thing about being deployed is that the xtra funds made while I'm here will support my next M14 build.:)

I love the pics. And, YES, the smooth side stock was a very early version. They are quite rare and have become collectible. Until you fill in the selector cutout and paint one, that is. Ha.

Get home safe and do that LRB. I have one LRB receiver left waiting to be built.

I heard that they were collectable, but I like them because they are lighter in weight as compared to the later types with the checkering. I have around 4 of them last I looked.

Lucky dog...I prefer the lighter stocks, too. HueyGunner (Jeff) has the carbon fiber stock, but it needs to be bedded.

The checkerless stock pictured was given to me, believe it or not.

I found another one just recently for 25 bucks at a flea market. No buttplate or rear sling swivel, and someone had painted it black.

I am planning to use it for my LRB build when I get back, after I do some work to it.

    UPDATE:

Looking hard at an LRB ARMS M14SA Tanker. Alredy built the way I wanted to build it, and only 5 rds fired thru it.

Looks like I'm gonna go with it as of now.

Built by LRB ARMS with the following NIW/New/like new parts:

Criterion 18.5in chrome lined std contour bbl

    Sadlak op-rod spring guide

    SEI parts as follows:
    Vortex direct connect flash hider
    Gas lock front sight (dovetail)
    Extended bolt stop

    USGI as follows:
    TRW bolt
    HRA op-rod
    SA TG
    KMT gas system
    WCE rear sight assembly
    synthetic stock

Pretty much exactly what I was looking for.:)
