Is it okay to use soft tip 30.6 150g for hunting season n a m1 garand instead of fmj

One shot - one kill - if it feeds the second shot...all the better. ;)

If you fire 8 rounds @ sight in + 1 more to kill a deer, most likely you will be ok.

Steer clear of using heavier bullet weight loads in quantity however as a bent operating rod could be the result.

its not the bullet weight its the power curve (burn rate) of the powder used. shelf ammo designed for bolt guns doesnt typically use powders with a burn rate that plays nice with garands.

to use store bought non garand fmj shelf ammo safely in a garand you need one of these:

Schuster DCM Adjustable Gas Plug with Wrench M1 Garand Steel Parkerized - MidwayUSA

you want to adjust to the minimum setting needed to make your garand cycle with the ammo your going to use.

Hornady and Federal American Eagle make hunting ammo specifically for the M1 Garand rifle. You might consider coughing up the coin for one of those options.

Commercial ammo has entirely too much pressure for a Garand. I know it's already been said, but really, really don't use it.
