See if you can find an SKS rifle at your next gunshow or visit the pawn shops. I love my SKS.

It varies; i paid about $325 or $350 for a Chinese model with an aftermarket stock and a little ammo. The availability of inexpensive ammo is what makes them a good deal (7.62x39mm).

How about a 12GA? Cheap models like the Mavrick 88 and Stevens 320 can be had for just north of $200 and are effective for home defense if that will be the primary purpose. Throw in another $100 and get a mosin for range fun :D.

    12ga remington 870 express magnum.

Endless aftermarket stuff, and for the price it doesn't get any better

If you would be OK with the giant-azz bayonet for the follow-up shot, you could spend about $100 and get a Mosin Nagant rifle, another $100 for about 400 rounds of ammo.

18 year olds cant buy handguns unless its from a private seller hmm yea id go with either an sks or a 12 guage you can put slugs in a 12 guage it throws some big azz slugs downrange and you can buy a rifled barrel that makes them fly even straighter its a really versatile tool you can use it for almost everything check out mossberg 500 they sell a combo barrel one short for home defense and one long when I was 18 that was my first gun and still love to this day.

Well idk about your state youll have to check local laws but in texas it's illegal for an 18 year old to purchase a hand gun or own one in his own house so if you get your dad to by you a gun and keep it at their house or yours to if you still live there till your 21 I'm pretty sure thats the law in all states. So ya take a look at an sks or ak at your next gun show also a mossberg 500 is great and right around 300. Also private seller means like your friend down the street who has a bunch of handguns. Also open carry is a law in states like Az where it is legal to carry a hand gun on your side with no license as long as its not concealed

A lot depends on what you want to shoot. Paper targets or clay. Do you have a range you can use. Most pistol ranges won't let you shoot rifles there.

Remember ammo can be very expensive. 308 for my bolt action is about $1 a round. My 44 mag ammo can go $1 a round also. Shotguns for bird shot are around $7 for a box of 25.

I would look at a 22 for a 1st gun. Like a Ruger 10-22. Its in your price range and you can buy a box of 550 rounds for $20. You could shoot all day for very little cash. This is the way most shooters learn the basics.

AZ does not require a license to carry concealed.

The age limit is a sore point with me. An 18 year old can fight and die for his country but is not allowed to own a handgun or vote. Either change the military age to 21 or change the gun laws and voting age.

Good advice! I do love my Mossy, and it is beside my alarm clock with an 18.5" barrel.

Maverick 88 *12 ga* is about 250$-280$ and is made by mossberg, those are a nice starter gun. since your limit is 400$ you could just buy a mossberg 500 or remington 870 *equal quality just what feels nicer to you* or as others have mentioned an Sks but for home defense I wouldn't recomend it. If you want something for HD and range time id go with a shotgun. Good luck, let us know what you come up with!

Look around for a NEF protector pump. Got mine for 180 at a LGS, its an 870 clone.

The pardner pump is also a clone of the 870. yes if I were you id go with a shotgun the shotgun is a very versatile weapon you can take down anything from ,rabit birds, to buffulo to deer you can breach doors you can use diffrent ammo for diffrent things it is a multi pourpose tool
