yes. it will need to be removed.

you will need a vice barrel blocks made from hardwood some rosin barrel wrench and miscellaneous tools for removing the gas block.

never use a upper reciever block for mounting dismounting barrels. torque from the barrel wrench can easily bend/warp/distort the upper.

if you were near se wisconsin could do the job in about 20 minutes

rule of thumb on which operation is safe for upper receiver block and which should be used barrel blocks is if it requires foot pounds of torque use the barrel blocks if it requires inch pounds use the receiver block

I think I'm just gone take and easier way out and substitute for right now. I don't have a work shop let alone know that much about the AR-15 platform I just take the short cut lol... :)

Before you order any reason to putting a rail on the gun??

Only reason I use rails is to mount optics . Otherwise I prefer the magpul moe handguards which rail.sections can be added if desired for things like lights etc.

Just wondering wouldn't the cantilever mounts that are offered by LaRue, AMD and others allow you to mount the optic of your choice. I have use them to mount the larger higher power scopes (NightForce, Leupold and others) successfully on AR's that did not have railed hand guards.
