How much do you want to spend? Fixed or folder? What do you need it/want it for (intended use)?

Gonna need a WHOLE lot more information to help you here.

You want a possible automatic, but you want it custom?

    Define "Automatic".

    SpeedSafe?

    Spring Assist?

A custom automatic for under $250?

My opinion on this, assuming you want tactical style, is that benchmade is king in that department. Sadly, that department is beyond $250.

You can find some good production automatics in that range (look at the Benchmade AFO, Stryker, or Reflex) but you won't touch custom folders, let alone custom automatic knives for that much.

Also, before buying be aware of your state and local laws regarding carrying and possession of automatic or "switchblade" knives. Some are very restrictive.

I was looking at bench made but I don't live in Oregon, and I'm not a cop, so I can't buy one because of the shipping

I think an automatic may be a bit unreasonable, a folder or a fixed blade would be fine but it has to be American made.

I got one of these. The spring sucks! :( It won't even go through a couple of sheets of printer paper on release. The knife is sharp as sh!t, but I was expecting to be like a piston.

A lot of the steels being used in the blades are coming from overseas my friend. Tons of it from Japanese foundries like AUS 8 steels that are commonly used in knives in this price range.

The OTF Microtech are not intended to be projected puncture weapon. I have several Benchmade automatics and assisted opening knives. They are great. But, no comparison to my Microtechs. If you don't like OTF their other autos are bada--

I saw this thread pop up again and thought.
This guy should have a Ruana Fixed. Made in Montana, family thing (read their history)

I like mine. Doesn't look to be a current model.

Ocassionally there is some true customs (limited or unique)

Then I thought.... he also needs one of these (truly beautiful blades).

But, you might want to try your build with one of these

(stinkin' web page is a slow-loader, error ridden piece of work)

I feel the Randall Made Knife, Orlando, Florida is the best but you can't touch one for $250.00 or less, add at least another $100.00-150.00. Fixed blade knives only, but the best for hunting, fishing, fighting, all around.

I just picked up a Spyderco Endura 4 plain edge. Great knife! I used my Sharpmaker to put a back bevel on it.

    http://www.randallknives.com/construction.php

And there are the links for blades to finish into knives.
Keep us posted on your progress.
