I'm looking for a Lee Enfield in 30.06, with a tight barrel.
    M1917, American Enfield.

The stock can be yucky but the steel needs to be aces

might consider taking an ad out in Shotgun News. that and searching the gun auction sites.

    good luck with your search.

I've looked at Gun Broker, it seems they are either busted up or they go for $850.

For 850, I can get another browning.

A few years ago, you couldn't give the P-17s away. But like 1903A3 Springfeilds, and Kar 98 Mausers, most have been "butchered" by gunsmiths (???) to make so-called "sporters.":(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

I recently bought one with a chopped stock and 4" was professionally removed from the barrel. I wanted a rifle to live in my truck that wouldn't break my heart if it were stolen. It certainly has no collectible value, but it is a great shooter, and it cost under $200.00 from a pawn. They are out there in all conditions from original to hacked-up. Original ones are getting pricey, but the altered ones are not hard to find.

If the barrel needs to be perfect, then you could get a new barrel from Criterion.

    M1917 Enfield Barrel

Naturally, that's going to add cost to an already expensive collector's item.

I remember when you could buy them in good condition for $20 mail order. Select for $27. Yes they were built into custom sporters as they were cheap and plentiful. I had one made into a 308 Norma Magnum in 1960 when I was in Alaska. Quite a few were converted to magnums because of the strength of the action. The 300 Win Mag came out in 1963 and pretty much killed the 308 Norma. 5 years ago you couldn't give Mosins away and now look at the prices.

Got the first one in about 1946 or 47 -- cost 7.50 from NRA, it came by railway express.
they were sold as "unserviceable" but was in great condition --

I picked one up a few tears ago for dirt. It had the stock cut but nothing permanent to the metal bits. I happened to acquire an M17 stock in a bundle of milsurp goods, so once I get the rear HG band, I won't be into it for much. I too remember when they were 30 bucks, with sling, bayo, & a bandoleer of ammo.

Good luck, they're out there, for the time being. PAX
