for small game like fox and coyotes. i want something somewhat quiet like a 22. for hunting at night without people hearing. i want to be able to shoot around 100 yards with a scope. i was thinking like a 17.

.22 mag should do the trick with well placed shots.

That varies widely. The rifle itself could be a couple hundred bucks for a Marlin up to $700 for a Browning T-Bolt.

RIMFIERS ARE NOT FOR HUNTING COYOTES. Do it right and get a centerfire.

If you are stuck on being unethical then keep shots to under 100 yards. Yotes are tough I have seen them take a 6mm to the chest and run off.

I'll object to that, .22WMR has been quite successful on coyotes up to 150 yds. Kinda depends on the shooter & whether or not he put enough scope (at least 12x-16x) on the rifle to make headshots at that range...but it does the job.

For longer than 150 yds and up to 1000 yds...6.5 Creedmore :D

.17 is definitely not enough. Even the guys that love .17 won't do coyote with it around here.
